Senator Larry Craig arrested for lewd conduct at Minneapolis airport

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Roll Call, a Washington, DC based Congressional magazine, is reporting that US Senator Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested last June at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport for lewd conduct in an airport men's room.

Craig, Roll Call reported, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and was fined $500 and given a year of probation for the June 11th inciden, which happened in an airport men's room. A 10-day jail sentence was stayed.

In an interview after his arrest Craig reportedly said he couldn't recall what exactly happened between himself and a plainclothes police officer in the airport men's room. Staffers in the senator's office claimed the whole incident was a "misunderstanding".

Senator Craig currently serves on a number of committees and subcommittees in the Senate and is the ranking member on the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Subcommittee on Superfund and Environmental Health and the Subcommittee on Interior and Related Agencies.

His seat is up for grabs in the November 2008 general election though the senator has not said whether or not he would run for re-election.

This is the second time in a year the Republican Party has been hit by scandal on Capitol Hill. Last September Republican Congressman Mark Foley of Florida resigned in the wake of a scandal where he it was revealed he had solicited teenage boys who had served as congressional pages.

I think it was the curve ball that got him. Just my hunch, but he probably rushed into the proposal in hopes that asking him in public place would pressure him into saying yes.

Citing the police report, Roll Call said Sgt. Dave Karsnia made the arrest after an encounter in which he was seated in a stall next to a stall occupied by Craig. Karsnia described Craig tapping his foot, which Karsnia said he "recognized as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct."

I better tell my husband not to tap his foot while he's in any public men's restroom. :wacko:

In an interview on May 14, 2007, with the Idaho Statesman newspaper, Craig responded to several allegations, including one by a Boise man who professed he essentially had been flirted with by Craig in 1994.

"I've been in this business 27 years in the public eye here. I don't go around anywhere hitting on men, and by God, if I did, I wouldn't do it in Boise, Idaho! Jiminy!"
