Hello everyone,

My fiancee just had her k1 visa interview at the Tokyo embassy, and she originally thought that the interview went well. She said that she thought that the consular officer didn't request any additional documents and that he said that the results of the interview would be posted on the CEAC website in about 1 week. However, when she got home, she realized that she received a piece of paper that said the visa was denied under Section 221(g) for Administrative processing. The paper didn't request any additional documentation, just that we should not contact them until 180 days after the interview. Naturally, this has gotten us kind of anxious.

I've read that administrative processing under section 221(g) can be used as a placeholder for routine background checks/security, and that it may be normal to receive this status while they review our documents, but I wanted to confirm that others have experienced something similar.

My fiancee also insists that we contact the embassy for clarification, but I'm thinking it may be unwise to contact them before the week is up. Would contacting them be a mistake?

Thanks everyone.

Thanks for that information. The form was white. I see that on the website you linked that white indicates a "complex category" under 221(g). I can't tell from the website whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. I guess that it's better than a pink form?

Please also remember that Administrative Processing (Background Checks, document verification and now Social Media review) is mandatory for all visa types and many embassies will "Refuse" under 221g until that AP is finished
