She applied in January, received her I-797, and completed biometrics on February 6. She’s considering traveling to India. Her current green card expires on June 16, 2026.

Is it advisable for her to travel and return using the expired green card along with the I-797, or what would be the recommended next steps?

Will she be back by June?

I am not seeing a category for person renewing the green-card. She is eligible to apply for citizenship but she cant take the test in English, we are waiting for another 5 when she can be exempted

Senior Master Sergeant, US Air Force- Retired (after 20+ years)- Missile Systems Maintenance & Titan 2 ICBM Launch Crew Duty (200+ Alert tours)

Registered Nurse- Retired- I practiced in the areas of Labor & Delivery, Home Health, Adolescent Psych, & Adult Psych.

IT Professional- Retired- Web Site Design, Hardware Maintenance, Compound Pharmacy Software Trainer, On-site go live support, Database Manager, App Designer.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Legally, she can board a plane to return to the US with just an expired 10 year Green card.  However, I would carry the I-797 with me also.  

Page 32 of the US Carrier Guide indicates she should be fine with an expired 10 year card:
