I would like to ask if it's OK to apply for SSN after marriage. My fiance's arrival would be around end of march and were applying for marriage license by 1st week of April and 3rd week of April will be our wedding ceremony. will there be any issue with this steps?

They may not process it with less than 30 days remaining on the I-94.  For a lot of people, that means it has to be done before marriage, but with your schedule you should be getting married and applying for SSN within 60 days of arrival, which is fine.  Make sure to allow time to get your certified marriage record back from your county clerk -- SSA wants evidence of filing not just the signed license.  (They need to know about the marriage for two reasons: (1) if your bride is taking your last name, the marriage certificate serves as the name change document and (2) to establish her eligibility for future spousal benefits based on your work record)

Congratulations on getting through the process!  Please complete your timeline so that others can know what to expect / the VisaJourney system can use your dates in its statistical analysis of how long different steps are taking.

Be advised you need appointment for SSN. Also birth certificate for foreign national. Not sure where you are but as soon as we got signed copy of marriage license from the wedding officiant, we went to the court house for certificate and received same day.

Thread is moved from General Immigration Discussion to the Social Security Numbers subforum.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

So did you guys got married before applying for SSN? I was thinking if we can do in-between while waiting for marriage license.

Before fiancee arrives call SS and schedule her appointment for a few days after her arrival

She will need passport with visa and her birth certificate and I 94 record

you can print out the SS-5 page from SS site and have it filled out by her to take to the office

you don't have to wait for marriage and getting it done ASAP is advisable

Sometimes getting  the appointment after marriage is delayed and makes it impossible to get until the EAD is approved

Don't wait

She was able to get before marriage about a month after arriving. We tried a week after arriving and SS offirce didn't see the save info yet. We requested a new SSN card when filing AoS and received in married name. It's my understanding this is not done automatically any more. I'm going by our timelines back in fall 2024.

Were arriving by march 31st, hopefully they save our info and try to get her SSN by april 1-8 I keep seeing that after arrival we had to wait 10days for her information to be saved in the system. Work case scenario is after marriage we'll just go straight to apply her a green card. Not sure how its gonna work

Whatever you do make sure you apply for the work permit. You can't predict how long the green card will take. My wife is still waiting after nearly 18 months. Absolutely nothing heard from uscis.

I-94 are electronic, there should not be any delay.  Try to set the appointment now for a few days after her arrival.  Cancel it if her i-94 is contains any error.  Best of luck.

she's still overseas would that be ok? i was checking their website and trying to look around at their application they just ask for names parents name, and address. I'm planning to tell her to do the application to make an appoint this week and set it by april 6-8. that would be 5 to 7 days upon her arrival.
