Hi everyone,

I recently submitted all required documents to NVC, and today I received this message:

“Please submit every 2024 W-2, 1099, and Schedule from Joint Sponsor.”

However, everything else was marked as “Accepted” — the only issue seems to be with this part.

My joint sponsor is self-employed and owns a restaurant. I already uploaded her complete 2024 tax return in one 26-page PDF file, which included:

  • Form 8879 (IRS e-file Signature Authorization)

  • Form 1040 and 1040-V

  • Schedule 1 (Additional Income and Adjustments to Income)

  • Schedule 2 (Additional Taxes)

  • Schedule C (Profit or Loss from Business)

  • Schedule E (Supplemental Income and Loss)

  • Schedule SE (Self-Employment Tax)

  • Form 6251 (Alternative Minimum Tax)

  • Schedule EIC, Schedule 8812, Form 8995, Form 8582, Form 8867, Form 4562.

So basically, her full tax return is there.
But I’m confused because, to my understanding, self-employed people usually don’t have W-2s, and if she didn’t receive any 1099s, there wouldn’t be any to include.

Has anyone else gotten this same message from NVC for a self-employed joint sponsor?

Are they just requesting clarification that there are no W-2s or 1099s, or should I try re-uploading the 2024 Tax document again (The 26 pages PDF file with all the forms)?

Any advice from those who’ve gone through this would be really helpful.

Try again with the transcripts and not the tax return. I have a hunch that will solve your problem. She can get them for free from the IRS website.

The transcripts page has several options. The “Record Account Transcript” contains both the return and filing status/dates. I think they might also accept just the return transcript (@pushbrk would know more), but as the record of account also contains the return plus more information it should be safe. Included a screenshot below.

Definitely the only transcript that is relevant is the Tax Return Transcript.  If you can get that, great, but also exlain there are no 1099 or W2 forms.  None of the transcripts in the list above are relevant to an affidavit of support.  Tax Return Transcript is what you're looking for.

The one I provided includes the entirety of the return transcript as well as additional data so would be more complete. Just wasn’t sure if they were fine with the simpler return-only version as well.

If they’re fine with the return-only version that’s useful to know, thanks.

Like I said, nothing in the image is relevant.  They need the Tax Return Transcript.  Account transcripts are NOT "more complete".  They are for a different irrelevant purpose.

You’re confusing the “account transcript” and the “record of account transcript”. The nearly identically named documents are both different and poorly named as they’re easily confused.

The “Record of Account Transcript” (what I suggested) contains both the “Tax Return Transcript” and the “Account Transcript” in one PDF. It is the most complete transcript you can get from the IRS and contains all the information the consulate would need.

Its poorly named as it can easily be confused with the “Account Transcript”, which is definitely not sufficient. The record of account transcript contains everything related to both the return and account status.

Anyway — my ping was to check if they could use the simpler return only version as the joint sponsor might have reasons to prefer that vs. all account info. Answer to that appears to be yes.

Yes, upload the Tax Return Transcript.  They know how to read that, and may well be confused by such a complicated full tax return with so many schedules.

Thanks everyone for your answers.

I was reading online that I should first verify what type of business entity my joint sponsor has — whether it’s a Sole Member LLC, a Sole Member LLC taxed as an S-Corporation, or something else — because depending on that, a self-employed person might issue a W-2 to themselves.

I’ll check with her accountant to make sure I didn’t miss anything. If this doesn’t apply to her situation, I’ll upload the tax transcripts and a PDF statement explaining that she has no W-2s or 1099s, since she’s self-employed.

Tax RETURN Transcript.  Not any of the other "tax transcripts".
