Hi everyone,

I’m a Spanish citizen and my fiancé is an American citizen. We are currently living in the Netherlands and preparing our K-1 petition for me to move to the US. His residence permit in the Netherlands was issued under the ‘Verification against EU law for Union citizen family members’, granting him legal status as the unmarried partner of an EU citizen.

As part of our evidence, we want to submit proof of our unmarried partnership under Dutch/EU law:

  • IND approval letter for residence as an unmarried partner of an EU citizen
  • His residence card showing on the back that he is the unmarried partner of an EU citizen

Both documents are in Dutch. USCIS requires English translations with a translator certification, but I’m unsure whether this must be a professional/certified translator, or if a Dutch native-speaker friend can translate these documents.

Has anyone submitted similar documents for a K-1 petition? Did USCIS accept a simple signed translation, or did they require a professional translation?

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!
