Five officers shot, three killed, in York County

Horrific violence and unstable men with guns don't just happen in big cities, but small towns too.

 

Yesterday 5 cops were shot, 3 murdered by a 24 year old man that was stalking his ex-girlfriend and her family on their rural farm. After the family had fled, fearing for their lives, the cops went to serve a warrant and remove him from squatting on the property. They were ambushed. This was in a small town on the outskirts of York, PA and is the second time this year cops have been killed in the line of duty from this department.

The Northern York County Regional Police Department says the three slain officers worked for their department. Of the two people who are injured, one of them is also an officer for NYCRPD.

"We ask our community to keep these officers, their families, and their colleagues in your thoughts and prayers during this time of unimaginable grief," a statement on the departments website said.

The NYRCPD administrative offices are closed. Neighboring departments and state police are providing police services to municipalities typically covered by NYRCPD.

Critical condition

The two law enforcement officials wounded in Wednesday's shooting remain in critical but stable condition at WellSpan York Hospital.

The suspect, identified by the AP as Matthew James Ruth, is dead. State police said he was shot by law enforcement.

"This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day for York County and for the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. We grieve for the loss of life and three precious souls who served this county, served this Commonwealth, and served this country. We continue to pray for the full recovery of those who are dealing with their wounds," Gov. Josh Shapiro said at a news conference Wednesday evening.

Det Sgt. Cody Becker was one of the officers that was murdered. He was honestly an amazing guy.. in 2010 he was recognized for his heroism in rescuing a family from a burning building. In his school days he was known for intercepting a pass from NFL QB Chad Henne and running it back 47 yards for a TD. As fate would have it, his catching skills came in handy the day he saved that family.
