My fiancee filed her N-400 online in El Paso, TX on 3/3. NOA arrived in the mail a few days later, biometrics are being reused. And now we have been waiting without any notice other than it says online all the documents they needed have been received and they are processing them. Her N-400 is based on 5 year residency, not marriage-based.

Anyone else here in the same boat?

Has anyone here who filed with the El Paso field office in March received their interview appointment?

I went through my N-400 process many years ago and it took me just 2 months, so I am confused this is taking so long.

Every case is unique.

I believe anything under 12 months is normal. Expecting interview within 3 months of filing is elevated expectation in my opinion.

Just to add to that point @MacPara

According to https://egov.uscis.gov/processing-times/, El Paso processing time is currently within 8 months for 80% of cases.

Yes.  In Dallas, it took 3 months to be notified of a future interview in 2022.

Following up on this:

  • We never received any letter/notification about combo interview. On the day of the interview my husband and I asked at the check-in desk about it, the officer looked it up on his computer and said he didn't see anything about combo interview in my file, but that my husband should go wait with me in the waiting room just in case.
  • We waited about an hour past our scheduled interview time in the waiting room. When I was finally called into one of the rooms I asked the officer about a combo interview and she said yup let's all go in and we'll do the I-751 part first. When we got to the interview room it didn't seem like she had my I-751 file ready because she asked us when we filed it and looked it up on her computer first. She asked if we had any additional supporting documents that we would like to show her (she noted that she also had my N-400 files so no need to show those again) and I gave her printouts of our most recent bank accounts and two pages of photos from the past couple of years that I printed at home (8 photos on each page). She looked over the photos and asked whether the people in some of the photos were our families (yes they were; some with my husband's family and some with mine). It's all a blur now but if I remember correctly the only other things she asked us were our living situation (where we currently live and whether we had lived at a different address previously), and whether we have any child together. Nothing elaborate or probing. Our I-751 was approved instantly and we all had to walk my husband out the interview room together.
  • After releasing my husband back into the waiting area, the officer walked me back into the interview room for the N-400 portion of the interview. She had me take the civil test right away (which I passed). And then she asked if anything had changed since I submitted my application and I told her that we recently had a family trip overseas. She looked it up on her computer and asked if that's the one from so-and-so date to so-and-so date, and I confirmed (I was a bit surprised that she knew the exact dates before I told her but I guess they have all our exit and entry data from the airlines/immigration so don't even try to lie about these things). She asked what the destinations were and what the trip was for (conference and family vacation). Lastly she verbally asked all the yes/no questions that were part of the application. And then she said my application was approved! She had me go over the oath and sign it, and told me that the next oath ceremony would be downstairs in 30 minutes! I was shocked because I had a morning interview and had heard that ceremonies normally took place at the end of the day, so I asked her how often the ceremonies took place and she said "every one and a half hour, we want everyone do be done with this quickly since they have already been waiting for a long time," which I thought was nice. I know not every field office does this though -- this was in Seattle. There were probably around 20-25 people (plus their companions) at my ceremony, and when we left the next group was already lining up outside, which looked to also be around 20, so there must be over 100 naturalized citizens coming out of this field office each day!

3/23: Filed online

4/09: Interview scheduled for 5/21

4/16: Called USCIS to reschedule interview we will be out of the country until mid June. I waited a week before calling because I wanted to avoid having the new interview date be only a few days after the original date as we would still be out of the country. I understood this was a gamble and I was risking getting buried in the queues.

4/16: Immediately received a notice that my original interview date has been canceled. I was aware of this verbiage so I didn’t freak out.

5/13: Received new interview date (took longer than expected). The new date is 6/18, which is perfectly what I was hoping for :)

6/18: Combo I-751 and N-400 interview; approved and oath ceremony on the same day!

Congratulations! What a relief for you! When you told that the officer didn't have your file i feel panic for you but everything went smooth 🙏

That was a smart thing to do on your part; I didn't make any request because I assumed their system would automatically recognize and connect the two (I know, never assume..). Luckily our field office does combo interviews (supposedly not all of them do?) and that the officer was able to locate my I-751 files.

That is exactly what I did in August of 2022.  It worked for us.

They don't always.  Isn't it a great feeling that you are out from under the thumb of USCIS?  Now, get that passport, and enjoy life, Citizen!!
