My wife's oath ceremony was yesterday. When she filed she checked the update social security info box. From the info they gave during the oath ceremony it must be mandatory. I don't know why it's an option on the N400 and USCIS just doesn't do it. They told everyone there that if they hadn't they'd have to fill out the form they were passing around and stick around afterwards. I believe the other option was going to your local office. Glad it's done.

I outlined my experience above. The checkbox on N-400 did not update my status with SSA. Others who naturalized after me also experienced the same, and they posted their updates in that attached thread.

If you don't receive SS card within a month, you'd have to go to SSA in person, just like I described.

USCIS is not responsible for citizenship status with SSA. They send information to SSA, but SSA have internal policy that prevents sending new card without visit.

Which form they were passing around? SS-5?

Keep us posted!

Thank you for the update. I didn't catch what form that was. If that checkbox didn't work I imagine it's not going to work for my wife. We had nothing but trouble with SSA trying to get her original card. Took a year. Sounds like she'll have to go there.

There was another issue with online N400 form related to how many kids under 18 I believe. They updated the form during her interview though.

Nah, I see there's at least 4000 cases filed in February in process as of today. I'd say 20-25% of cases are still undecided.

Per casestatusext around 45% have been decided. But the tough bit is that only around 12% haven’t at least heard *something*.

I know those numbers may not be representative because that website can only track paper applications, but I think it is reasonable to assume paper and only move broadly in the same ways.

I’m still within my processing time - I filed say 5.25 months ago and stated processing time is 9 months. But it is tough watching so many applications move along while mine is just isn’t. And I just want to be done. So badly.

One thing that I learned while filling the DS11 (Paspport application form) is that N-600 (Certificate of Citizenship) which cost over $1300 and takes between 12 and 18 months, used primarly by minors who benefit from derivate citizenship, it is not necessary to obtain a US Passport, according to the form itself. I also asked the official who helped us and confirmed it. So unless I am misunderstanfing the form and the passport officer is wrong, any one who meets the following requirements can obtains a US Passport without filing a N-600 and spending over $1300 dollars.
