Yes he told me what happened but i don't really know the full story that's why i have to do more research... and thank you!

You don’t need a special visa to get married in the U.S. or to a prisoner BUT there might be special rules around how to get married in his particular facility so you’ll want to investigate that.  R

MUCH better plan.  

He has a GED and some kind of degree in welding

Okay, with a trade like welding, he should be able to make a good enough living to sponsor you, assuming there are employers who would hire a felon.  There may be special programs he could look into.
