Hi everyone.

A friend of mine isn't apart of VJ but is facing some issues and wanted to see if there was any insight here to help her. She got married in the UAE and has an official marriage license  in Arabic with English translation. The document is issued by the court and has all the official stamps on it. NCV's response every time is "Please replace this with an acceptable marriage certificate from a correct issuing authority." What does this mean? It's been rejected 3 times. Is it because there is no sworn statement from the translator and just an official stamp? Thanks!

is it a marriage license or marriage certificate?

Does the marriage certificate comply with this:

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/Visa-Reciprocity-and-Civil-Documents-by-Country/UnitedArabEmirates.html

Document Name:  Marriage Contract (Aqd al Zawaj)

Issuing Authority: Ministry of Justice, Judicial Courts and Departments, Sharia (Religious) Courts

Special Seal(s) / Color / Format: There are no special seal(s)/color/format

Issuing Authority Personnel Title: A judge

?

Does the translation comply with this:

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/the-immigrant-visa-process/step-5-collect-financial-evidence-and-other-supporting-documents/step-7-collect-civil-documents.html/

Please note that all documents not written in English, or in the official language of the country from which you are applying, must be accompanied by certified translations. The translation must include a statement signed by the translator stating that:

  • The translation is accurate, and
  • The translator is competent to translate

We often get questions about "marriage license".  By definition, that document is secured prior to marriage, when required.  For US Immigration, what is needed is the local equivalent of a "Marriage Certificate" that can only be obtained AFTER being legally and lawfully married.  The actual name and issuing agency varies by country.  Mike E has provided the information and answer to your direct question.

Having a third party ask questions about one's case is an inefficient way to get help.  Best for your friend to ask instead of you doing it for them.
