Hi ! Went to SS office in Sunnyvale last week to get my name changed in the SS records from my maiden name to married name so that I can officially start using it at the bank, for applying a credit card etc. I took my marriage certificate with me alongwith the passport. The person there asked for my green card to which I told him i had just applied for it and haad requested it in my married name. He looked up his computer and said the system had me in the country with my maiden name and the DHS might get confused if he changed my name in the SS card>

Is this the case?? Do I need to have everything in my maiden name then?

:help:

Well you applied for the GC under your married name right?

In which case I don't see why they would be confused. I think she was just giving you a stupid excuse not to take care of it. After all it stays the same number so I don't see any reason to worry.

If I were you I would just go back there and get it changed.

Good luck with SS...

Yup...I applied for GC in my married name. All the paperwork..a lot of duplication...is simply crazy. I will try again..I hope i get a different guy on my turn. Or maybe wait for the NOA-1 which will have my married name, i presume??

That is crazy! Last week I went to the SSA with my marriage cert an aked them to change it. Everything was processed and she gave me the standard 'wait 48 hrs to update your details with DMV, your card will arrive in 2 weeks and congratualtions'. I think the person who you spoke to is wrong because I havent even received my NOA1 for AOS yet, and there was nothing said about 'DHS being confused'.

Thanks for the info. I guess i will try again. I had another question...since you have got your drivers license as well..i had trouble with them too today :crying:

I have put a post as well for this.

"I went to DMV for my California driver's license and was turned back as I was unable to show my legal presence even though I have a SS# sad.gif My I-94 is no longer good as it expires on Sept 20. The girl said I need to wait for the greencard or request USCIS for document proving my legible legal presence?? I told her I have applied for my greencard.

I do need a drivers license to move around here..and helps as an ID too :help: "

Ugh this has been giving me such a headache!

I entered on 31st jan, married april 15th and submitted all my paperwork before may was up.

I followed instructions and applied for my social security number within 2 weeks after entering

Twice I have gone to the office to change SS to married name and they keep telling me I'm not on the system. The last time was less than a week ago, even though I filed my AOS stuff they tell me not on the system. They've told me to come back in 2 weeks, at least they gave me a letter so I don't have to wait in line...just grab a ticket.

I took my stamped biometrics letter and I think she put one of the case numbers into the computer and it was the EAD which had recently been approved, I don't think she bothered to try the other one which was the AOS. I'll be sure to take something else next time.

I think I was just unlucky that the woman didn't know what she was doing and/ or couldn't be bothered. You might not be so unlucky...but I do wish they would make these things clearer, we're not mind readers!

Oh I took:

passport

marriage certificate

current SS card

recently obtained work permit

approved biometric form (the Notice of Actions should be fine, I only grabbed this cause I found it first and it had the case numbers on it)

I was asked for all except the marriage certificate.

PS - I realise they the social security office and DHS/USCIS prolly have different systems and whatever but they must have something in common to verify some of the information

We have the same experienced about SSC guys, I went to SSA last month to change my maiden name to married name they said that I need to wait for my green card before I change my name because my I-94 was expired already but I I want to change my name only and I have my SSC I applied for it after 2 weeks of arriving here, But many others did the same thing like I did and they were no problem. It seems thet SSA employee have different rules in their office designated they have no stardard rules to follow, I thought different person infront of the counter have different rules ohhhhh! its a head ache for me too! God Bless us all....

Good luck to us all,

arch & cel
