I wonder whether people who don't use OnStar or LCD-based Google Maps remain in danger.  Surely if one plugs in one of the older-style, stand-alone Garmin or Magellan GPS units, that info can't be slurped up... ?

It's really almost to the point I can't deliver a automobile and utilize all the features with out setting up on account on a smart phone

More than likely a feature they do not need or want.  How many unused apps do you have on your phone?  Vehicles are essentially just tablets on wheels hoovering up personal information so someone can profit.  Now I do not have a problem with someone making a profit, but in this case it seems so coercive and in some ways underhanded.  Let people know what you are doing and let them have an honest way to opt out.  I am sure there are plenty of folks willing to part with their privacy, heck, how many folks have smart speakers, or other smart devices listening to them in their homes.

In some cases renders the head (radio)

Useless.  They don't get our version of on star. Navigation, remote start etc

The kicker is they have to install the app to unsubscribe to every thing. You are correct everything is subscription based. One thing I do like is rhe andriod auto and apple carplay. Makes built in navigation obsolete. 

Google maps and waze is superior to anything the manufacturer offers 

 

One feature I do like is the digital key. Your smartphone basically acts as a key. Sadly it is subscription based after the trial period

I fully agree about AA and CP.  I use Waze regularly, and even though Google bought them, it is still superior.  Of course we are hearing some car companies saying they are ending AA and CP compatibility.  Now that is going to be hard IMO as even though Tesla does that now, Tesla owners will put up with it, but will GM, Ford, etc. customers accept it.

It is absolutely ridiculous that every damn thing these days has to be 1) connected to the internet 2) use an app 3) requires a subscription and 4) is all touchscreen.

 

This isn't just about cars of course but it creates so many points of failure, creates more things that can be "hacked", creates massive issues with privacy, and...I could keep going ad nauseum. Also the touchscreen thing is just a personal pet peeve - there are just certain things I like to be able to do in the car by FEEL, without taking your eyes off the road. Give me my knobs and buttons!

 

The improvements in safety features that have occurred in the last decade are great but everything else is for the birds.
