Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton teetered on the brink of impeachment Thursday after years of scandal, criminal charges and corruption accusations that the state’s Republican majority had largely met with silence until now.

In an unanimous decision, a Republican-led House investigative committee that spent months quietly looking into Paxton recommended impeaching the state’s top lawyer. The House could vote on the recommendation as soon as Friday. If it impeaches Paxton, he would be forced to leave office immediately.

The move sets set up what could be a remarkably sudden downfall for one of the GOP’s most prominent legal combatants, who in 2020 asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Joe Biden’s victory. Only two officials in Texas’ nearly 200-year history have been impeached.

Paxton has been under FBI investigation for years over accusations that he used his office to help a donor and was separately indicted on securities fraud charges in 2015, but has yet to stand trial.

In breaking news on this Saturday evening, Attorney General Ken Paxton was impeached by the Texas House for alleged criminal corruption.

 

Republicans overwhelmingly joined with the Democrats in the chamber to pass the resolution by a 121-23 margin.  Paxton will now be tried in the Texas Senate (Fox News).

It's gone to the Senate (the jury).  If Paxton is found guilty of even one of the 16 charges, he's done.

 

All the on-scene analysts seem convinced that the prosecution put on the better case, by far.  I'm not so sure.

 

Closing argument was factual by the prosecution, emotional by the defense.

 

If the Senate didn't return verdicts by 8 p.m. today (I haven't heard), they meet again at 9 a.m. Saturday.  If they can't decide by Saturday, they must stay in the Senate chambers overnight Sunday-to-Monday until they do.  Or similar.
