Hello everyone, I just wanted to share my N-400 Interview experience in the LA office. I had it yesterday (8/4/2022). For some context, I have a pending I-751 with divorce waiver which I filed in December of 2018. I had my I-751 interview in April of 2021, and a surprise home visit in April of this year. I filed my N-400 in January of this year and received an interview notice scheduled for August 4, 2022. I also received another interview notice for a I-751 interview on August 5, 2022 at the same exact time and location as my N-400 interview, only difference was the date. I called in asking to to change it to a combo interview (even though I already had my initial I-751 interview) but they never got back to me. So I showed up to my N-400 interview yesterday and I showed the officer my 2 interview notices and asked him if he can do a combo. He looked at the I-751 notice and said it didn't make any sense because he can see I already had that interview in April of last year and there was also nothing in the system showing that I have another interview scheduled. He took the notice and told me not to worry about it and that he would just be doing my N-400 interview. He said he would talk to the officer that did my initial I-751 interview and ask why she hadn't made a decision yet. We started with the civics and English test. I was asked:

  • What did the Emancipation Proclamation do?
  • What is one right or freedom from the First Amendment?
  • Name your U.S. Representative.
  • In what month do we vote for President?
  • What is one reason colonists came to America?
  • What is the name of the national anthem?

I got all the answers correct. He then had me read "Where is the White House located?" and had me write on a tablet "The White House is located in Washington DC"

We then went over my application. I originally put down that I wanted to change my name but he stated they are no longer doing name changes so he changed it to "No". He then had me review the changes to my application on a tablet and had me sign it. He also had me sign the Oath of Allegiance. He then handed me a paper that stated I passed the English and Civics test but a decision could not be made due to my pending I-751.

This morning I called the USCIS Customer Service line just to double check if I had to come in today for that I-751. I explained to them what the officer told me yesterday and that he took my interview notice and told me not to worry about it. The lady on the line said there's no record of me being scheduled for an interview today so it may have been a glitch. Crossing my fingers that that is exactly what happened. Will keep you guys updated.

Thanks so much for sharing! I’m in LA and going to file my N400 this November, also had my I-751 filed with waivers, just did my biometrics this week. So hopefully I’ll get a combo interview down the road.

Good luck to your I-751! You’ll get your oath ceremony notice in no time I’m bet!:)

BTW, Do you mind sharing the experience of that surprise home visit? Just wonder if you 2 were still living together at the same marital location and if the visit happened after your interview? What was the purpose of the visit if there had been a divorce undergoing? Much appreciated!

The home visit actually made no sense. We were divorced since November of 2018 so I have no idea what they were looking for. Two officers came banging on my door early one morning, I opened my door and they both showed me their Department of Homeland Security badges and stated they were "here for a follow up regarding my green card application." I offered them to come in but they refused. They asked for my photo ID and took a photo of my ID then began to ask me some questions. One of the officers had a manila folder with a notepad in it where he was writing my answers down. They asked " So you're divorced?" I said yes, they asked when we were divorced, I answered November of 2018. They asked if we lived here (referring to my place) together. I said yes.  "When did you guys get married? Did you move in together after you got married?"  I said no we were already living together prior to getting married, in fact we were together for 8 years prior to getting married. Then asked when my ex had moved in with me, how many bedrooms are there, if anybody else had lived with us, why did we get a divorce, where my ex currently lives.  They asked if I had a phone number for my ex and also asked for my phone number. One of them asked the other if he had anything to add. He said no, then said "okay well thank you, you have a good one." Then they left.

Yes the visit happened after my initial I-751 interview. The visit was in April 2022. My initial interview was April 2021.
