make above the poverty guidelines in my last tax return, but I want to be extra safe as some of the income is from self-employment and temporary jobs.  Is it okay to use a joint sponsor or use my assets in this case?

Although last years  tax return income is good, you will NOT qualify for “ current income” requirements if you are self-employed or in between temp jobs.

To qualify your self employed current income, you need to study and prepare the precise evidence required by USCIS , effectively requiring you to draft a profit and loss for the last 6 months and bank statements to back up deposits/ gross revenue-expenses….plus other requirements specific to your line of work…OR you won’t get past the RFE…so your business bank account is looked at as an operating account ( to prove self employed income )  and cannot be also included as an “asset “ .

If you now have a new qualifying income W-2 job, then just provide paystubs and job letter…otherwise as @powerpuff advises, find a friend to go in as Joint Sponsor .

It is allowed, correct?

USCIS says to do a joint sponsor if you earn below the poverty requirement.  I wanted to make sure that is also permissible to have a joint sponsor if you are above the poverty line.

Yes. They will decide if you meet their requirements.. and if they decide that you dont, having the joint sponsor paperwork already filed saves time by enabling the officer to hopefully make the decision then

Yes, absolutely allowed and preferred for a quick approval. No issues with whatever your income level , you are submitting a qualified joint sponsor specifically to avoid any issues related to the self-employed dilemma.
