to answer your question "do u tip take out food" the answer is HELL NO !!!!

im not a very big tipper either...i dont agree with the ways they have here that you must give a tip whenever you to to a restaurant...i only tip if the person is nice, and works for their tip...asks me if i want something else....she/he is polite etc etc....it happened a lot of times to go to arestaurant and i would sit there for 30 min till someone came to take my order and when i asked for a refill they looked at me like they wanted to stab me...thse people dont deserve a tip in my opinion...so when they were acting like that, i paid my bill and left just 1 $ on the table....

In Brazil tips are included, I'm still getting used to tip people here. If I were in the same situation as you I wouldn't had tipped either.

How's your wife been? We should have another meet-up someday, maybe in a brazilian restaurant :D

I agree with everyone - No tip for take out unless it's delivered to your car and/or home.

I would have asked to speak to the guys manager and let him know that the guy at the take out counter was ASKING for a tip.. That's not cool at ALL.

It is always a good thing to put a zero in the tip line and/or a line through it and total it below btw. Otherwise the workers can go after you and "put on" a tip (it has happened to friends of mine).

Just because all the restaurant's visa machines are programed to pre-authorize with a tip line does NOT mean the take out guys should expect tips.. Ridiculous!

Tipping in the United States is widely practiced and is culturally considered by some as a social obligation under a variety of circumstances. Many find the system antiquated, adding an unnecessary complication for the customer. Employees in occupations where tipping is common sometimes receive very low salaries and receive the bulk of their compensation in tips. United States wage laws stipulate lower minimums for occupations where tipping is expected.

In general, tipping is computed on the amount of a transaction before tax.[1] The practice of tipping varies from place to place. In general, tipping is practiced when services are rendered personally by a low-level employees in the restaurant, bar, hotel, and taxi industries.

Tipping is always up to the discretion of the person receiving the service. When tipping is expected, giving a very small tip, such as a penny, is used as a deliberate snub, to indicate service was mediocre or inferior.

At a restaurant

Tipping is considered by some to be a social obligation in restaurants having traditional table service. The customary tip for a restaurant meal in the United States traditionally ranged from 10 to 15 percent of the total bill (before tax), with 15 to 20 % now the norm [21]. According to Fodor's: At restaurants, a 15% tip is standard for waiters; up to 20% may be expected at more expensive establishments. Good service is expected, and it is sometimes acceptable for a tip lower than 10% to be applied for ordinary or unsatisfactory service.

A recent trend has developed, with restaurants themselves recommending up to 20 percent tipping of the total bill (after tax), which means you'd be tipping on the tax. Tipping.org indicates that this is not the standard.

Tipping on wine with a meal requires some discretion/judgement, as most restaurants mark up their wine 200 to 400 %. Tipping etiquette websites (e.g. Findalink.net/tipping etiquette, winespectator.com, ca.answers.yahoo.com, etc.) suggest a tip of 15 % on the meal before tax, and 5-10 % on the wine (especially if the total wine bill is near or exceeds the cost of the meal).

With the advent of take-out and curbside service at many restaurants, tips for curbside attendants are optional. More money may be offered if exceptional service is provided or if the order is particularly difficult.

Tipping at buffet-style restaurants is not common. Pay-at-the-register restaurants and café restaurants often have a tip jar at the counter, although tipping is not traditional or necessary. Similarly, tipping is not necessary for pick-up/take out food.

Tipping at fast food restaurants and coffee places such as Starbucks (where there is no traditional table service), is not necessary, despite the growing number of tip jars (a.k.a. "guilt jars") appearing at them.

It is common for servers to "tip out" portions of their tip receipts to support staff like bussers. Bartenders usually are tipped seperately by the patrons ordering drinks at the bar, [23]

I really get annoyed when people think that they deserve a tip just because they exist. You had already paid for the food that was provided, and had pciked up the food yourself, so there is no reason at all to tip. Reminding you that a tip is customary is the height of bad manners and shows a complete lack of social etiquette. Its a form of begging IMO.

Of course I tip well when I receive good service, however, I do not tip well, or at all, if service is under par or bad. It still astounds me that a waiter who insulted my husband at one particular restaurant looked horrified when no tip was left.

You were absolutely right not to tip and the restaurant mangement would probably agree.

Depends on the kind of take-out restaurant. If you pick-up at a full service restaurant where the food is delivered to your car, I suppose a modest tip may be called for. If it's a plain take-out food place where you walk up to the counter to self-serve, then I don't think a tip is called for.

i agree. i will tip for 'curbside' service, nothing else.

i think tipping has gotten out of hand. why should you tip take-out orders? of course its appreciated but to ASK? no class at all.

Tipping here is definately out of hand, its about time these employees were in included in the minimum wage so that tipping could be given for good service and not because its expected!!!!

Tipping irritates me!!!! Unless you had excellent service.....

I would say OK and write the number 0 on the tip line.

I tip the delivery guy/girl, bartenders, waitresses/waiters...etc.

I was just told that people tip the housekeeper in (fancy) hotels...I wasn't aware of this, but I'll sure tip next time. That's NOT an easy job.
