It is not optional to update the address - it is required.

First, for the USC as part of the I-864 obligations.

Second, for the immigrant because Section 265 of the Immigration and Nationality Act requires address change update within 10 days for all foreign nationals and legal permanent residents:

Failure to update USCIS can lead to fines, imprisonment, and/or deportation.  Though it is unlikely if the failure to notify was due to innocently not knowing about it, per law they can enforce this.  At the very least, your I-485 will be denied.

we just got a notification of an interview date in NY for April 6th for AOS I-485, yeah! however, we just moved to North Carolina, i just filed change of address today.

i called uscis and asked what to do about the interview. they said i can keep the NY date or request a new one closer to home. i asked if it would delay the interview and she said probably.

question is, any idea how long should i expect to delay? I'm guessing NC is pretty quiet compared to NY so hoping not too long

thanks
