Dear Friends,

I just want to understand whether there are any background checks performed for applicants applying for B1 VISA in India. I did notice there is Form D-160 needed to filled by applicants but that doesnt ask for any Educational Certificates or Employment Documents to be uploaded?

However there is a gap (removed
between appointment date and D160 submission date was wondering whether there is any checks happening during this period like Checking Bank Account Balance,Employer and Educational Checks.

Can someone help?

Thanks.

There is a very long (>one year) queue for B visa interviews in Mumbai.

Yes, they do background checks.

Pretty sure it happens after the interview and only those who pass the interview get a thorough background check. The status of your application will change to "Administrative processing" during background checks and then after that either "refused" or "issued."

It does not happen during the wait time between submitting the DS-160 and the interview, it happens after the interview. It can happen that you get verbally approved during the interview but then your case will sit there pending under AP for days, weeks or months. It depends on if there's something in your case that triggers a deeper background check or not. Here's an example of someone that happened to:

There's no reason to be concerned, though, AP for most B visas is over and done with within a matter of days. It's pretty rare to see someone wait weeks or months for it.
