Fiancée and kids (k2) headed to US

My fiancée and her two kids are finishing up medical and interviews soon. We anticipate them being in the States at the end of February or early March. 

 

When they fly to the US in k1 and k2 visas, are they required to fly directly from the Philippines? Would they be allowed to transit (layover) through Japan or Singapore without any issues?

No such requirement when coming to the USA.  My wife transited Seoul.   If they do transit, just be sure to understand the transit countries requirements, if any

I'm just not sure if they would have to quarantine or not. I cannot find any information on layovers.

Most likely no quarantine if never leaving the airport, but each country will have there own rules.

For Singapore, they require negative PCR test. I was checking it back in December. Doubt it has changed.

Why not just direct to US, then on to final destination?

My wife and step daughter transited Singapore in October.  At the time Singapore had a somewhat stricter rona test requirement for transit than the US did for arrivals.  Mainly that it had to be a PCR test from a Phil DOH accredited lab within 48 hours of departure, whereas the US would accept a rapid antigen test within 72 hours from any ol’ doc.   That wasn’t a problem to get in the Philippines and the main benefit of Singapore transit for them was that they were able to depart from Clark rather than NAIA.  The trip went very smoothly and they were escorted and driven between gates by golf cart in Singapore.  The Singapore Airlines flight attendants totally spoiled my stepdaughter by doting on her the entire 15-hour flight to Los Angeles.

 

As for Japan, previously the only requirement for transit was a confirmed onward flight the same calendar day.  Narita is a very friendly airport for transit as well.

It's too expensive now. Have you seen ticket prices? Two weeks ago they were 500 one way. Now it's over 1000. And it will put them in lax in the morning rather than super late at night.

I just consider your fiance traveling alone with 2 kids. If they are a little older I guess that will be less of a problem.

I don't think a few hours layover in Japan would be a huge deal. Especially if the luggage is already on the plane. They could eat a decent meal and get some exercise before leaving for the US. Arriving in LAX in the morning means not having to get a hotel.  I'd fly to LAX and accompany them the rest of the way.

Also, breaking up the flights to more manageable lengths for the kids is important.  My 2 yr old did not appreciate the 14 hr flight but she handled the shorter hops much better.

Narita is a nice kid friendly layover if the schedule and airfare works out.  I wouldn't be concerned at all about an inexperienced traveler taking children through there.  ANA or JAL will proactively make the connection work out for their passengers. Singapore was awesome too for my wife and stepdaughter but it certainly added to the flight time.  The extra hours in the air were made up for by way over the top attention from the Singapore Airlines flight attendants for my stepdaughter plus the plane was half empty so it was a really easy trip.

My fiancee (now wife) and her 5yo tranferred through Japan in November no problem.
