I am honestly not offended that there is a historical trait of male-based artists creating nude female bodies in art, because well, I'm pretty sure they also created nude male bodies too. I have been to many museums both in the US and abroad, there is no shortage of male and female nudes. There are plenty of female artists today, just as there were way back when, and perhaps if someone is missing more female modern artists today is instead go out to small museums, local museums and galleries that feature local artists and see the types of artwork out there. Yes our older museums should be including those among their gallery walls, but that doesn't mean we should be lazy and not go support local artists who have their works displayed at other locations.

 

I'd also never say that female artists are considered somehow 'lesser' than their male counterparts. We live in a world where we can not only understand the life story of Artemisia Gentileschi, but see that translated into her paintings which were far ahead of her time. And she painted plenty of nudes.

I would say you don't have to snub any male artist - as many of the women I'm thinking of are considered as great as their male counterparts. They deserve to be placed along side each other, if they aren't already. There are many older works by female artists, some you may have seen already, but just never realized. That also includes unique types of artwork like Japanese ukiyo-e. Old masters from the 1500s. Impressionist paintings.. contemporary works and incredible sculptors too.
