Do I need a round trip ticket to Brazil??

Hi. My last topic I posted on this subject, (Please see the link below), I got kind of a cold response from some the VJ er's because I was questioning their responses when they stated, "the Brazilian Custom Agents would not require me to show them a round trip ticket before I was allowed to enter Brazil." So I decided to ask the Brazilian Consulate in Houston my question.

The Brazilian Consulate in Houston said that I am required to show the Brazilian Customs Agent a round trip ticket prior to them allowing me into Brazil. I asked them if 2 one way tickets would work and they said, "No, I would need a round trip ticket to enter Brazil."

So now I am totally confused because I have found that it is much cheaper to buy one way tickets, (even though many VJ er's have stated the opposite).

Can anyone say if what the Brazilian Consulate in Houston said was accurate? Or, are the responses from many VJ er's accurate when they said that one way tickets would work fine?

Anyone know for sure? Thanks for your help.

I believe we all said it doesn't matter for your fiancee to go to the States with a one way ticket, so buy roundtrip for you and for your fiancee it doesn't matter if it's round trip or 1 way, then buy whichever is cheaper.

Why can't you a buy a round trip for yourself, and a one-way ticket for your fiancee? Just ask the agent or search online to make sure her one-way ticket is in the same flight, and book seats in advance to get two together. It's not that hard to do.

Although I think it's not a requirement to have a round-trip ticket when entering Brazil, customs in Brazil could question you and think that this means you plan on overstaying your visa.

What is the difference between a RT ticket and two OW tickets? If you have both in your possession when you enter the country the fact is that you have a ticket on a certain date to leave the country which is what they want to know if they even care about this...

YMMV

That's what I think, and if you have proof that you'll exit, doesn't even matter if you haven't bought your ticket back yet.

Hi. I checked a second time with the Brazilian Consulate in Houston on this question just to make certain they were giving me the correct information the first time I spoke to them. They said that I would not be allowed to enter Brazil without showing proof of a round trip ticket. I asked them if 2 one way tickets would be okey. They said "NO it is not the same", showing proof of 2 one way tickets is not the same as showing proof of 1 round trip ticket.

So... I really don't understand the difference either but it would have been a heck of thing to waste alot of money on one way tickets and then not be able to enter Brazil. I learned something new this week and I thought I'd pass it on to all of you VJ er's so we could inform others of the requirement of showing proof of 1 round trip ticket if they are using a temporary visa (tourists visa).

Luis&Laura....., as I have said before I have found several airline websites that are offering $600 one way tickets to Brazil. And..., I have also found that my fiance can buy 2 one way tickets to America for about $1100 each ticket. Which altogether equals $2800 for me to fly to Brazil and back and also my fiance to fly to America with me.

If you can find a cheaper price using round trip tickets then I'd be interested in you showing me the website or the airline company offering this airfare at this price. I'm figuring I can save about $2000 by not buying round trip tickets. If you like to waste money then that's your prerogative. For me, if I can save $1 and it's just as easy as the other option then I'm going to go with the cheaper option. Throughout your life that $1 adds up very quickly. You might want to try it too... :) Have a great day everyone and thanks for your advice, good and bad. I'm off to buy round trip tickets!!!

So your total fare is $1700 (OW down $600 + OW back $1100). I don't know where you are looking but $1700 for a RT is expensive even in today's high price markets.... What prices are you seeing for comparable RT itineraries?

Also a lot of things depend, like the season, the day, you can find cheaper tickets when it's like winter here than when it's summer and everybody wants to come to the States. Same if you try to go to Brazil Carnaval week for example. And sometimes if you try to buy to fly on a tuesday is cheaper than on a wednesday. I know it sounds crazy, but there's a lot to weigh when buying a ticket.

Yes, very accurate!! This is exactly what I have found also. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays are the most expensive days. Tuesdays are the cheapest. Because of our schedules I will need to travel to Brazil on one of the most expensive days. So from what I have found, $1700 for 2 one way tickets (during the expensive days) is very cheap. But that is neither here or there now because I have learned that the Brazilian Customs Agent will not allow me into Brazil if I do not have proof of a round trip ticket.

Well, I dunno what to say anymore, my husband has entered Brazil through Rio 5 times in the past 3 years and in NONE of these times was he required to show his ticket. It was his passport, and that's it.

The price for your tickets will depend on your departing and arriving airports, date of trip, high or low season, etc. Flight prices can vary 200 dollars in a matter of hours so it's really hard to say THIS or THAT will be cheaper. In my personal experience round-trips come out cheaper, except for the very last time that I used Copa Airlines (Panama Company) going through a lot of stops and got a really cheap ticket one-way. That was an exception and the price was back up a few hours after I bought it.

Well, there you have it... a person's real experience of actually transiting passport control in Braszil or the information provided from the Brazilian consulate in the US.... You will have to decide for yourself who to believe....

FWAGUY - I believe both, the Brazilian Embassy in Houston and also Lisa and Laura. I'm not doubting that many people can make it through the Brazilian Customs line without being asked to show proof of a round trip ticket. I asked the question so that I could understand how to travel to Brazil the LEGAL and RIGHT way. If you think you can travel to Brazil on a one way ticket then by all means go for it. Only do not say I didn't tell you so when you are the 1 out of 1000 that the Brazilian Customs Agent asks to see your round trip ticket and then denies you entrance. Take care my friend. :)
