Being American to me means freedom. Freedom to own property or a business, freedom to speak my mind, freedom of religion.

I feel I'm living the American dream.........maybe by other's standards I'm not though. I'm sure to other's I may not appear "successful". I'm happy so I get that's what really counts.

These freedoms exist in many countries. What makes the US different in this way to me is that Americans have a more overt awareness and expression of these freedoms. In Canada, for example, we have the same freedoms, but they're just, well, there.

To me, being American means that I have the freedom of choice in what I do as long as it doesn't infringe on anyone else's right's or privace. Being able to participate in government elections. Not being afraid to differ with someone else's point of view if I don't agree. A lot of other countries can't do these things freely.

Am I living the American dream? Well, I'm working on it.
