I am a USA resident and just got lay off after working for over a year, I am wondering how me applying for unemployment will affect my sponsor?

Unemployment is akin to an insurance program that you and/or your employer pay into and you earn benefits from. It is not a public charge issue. It won't be held against you or your sponsor.

Whether you qualify for it or not depends on various circumstances under your state's UC program. But no harm to apply and find out.

You already pay out of your paycheck from your paycheck but I m sure states have their eligibility criteria. So go ahead and apply for it, it wont affect sponsor.

Unemoloyment is employer paid not an employee deduction

It is in my state. It comes out of my paycheck and is on my W-2.

Ok then its upto state. Here in CA, disability insurance goes from paycheck but unemployment insurance is paid by employer.

Yup. In all but 3 states, that's the case.

Same here in Washington State.  Employer + employee paid.

 

Actually- maybe not for UI? As of Jan 1 we have a new statewide paid family and medical leave benefit (12 weeks of paid leave for those eligible) that employees and employers are paying into.
