Hello VisaJourney!

my boyfriend proposed while I was with him in Ghana this week. We want to start the K-1 visa process but we don’t even know where to start. He is Nigerian, so we also have the immigration ban to consider. Just some tips on what to start collecting and how while we wait for the ban to lift? What are some good sources of information? Thank you in advance!!!

File the I-129F now.  No need to wait for the ban to be lifted.   The consular officer can recommend a waiver at the interview.

As others have said, you can begin the process now, no need to wait, but considering Ghana is one of the most difficult, if not the number 1 most difficult embassy to get a visa approved in ( Even before the ban). start racking up lots of visits and proof of all the time spent together. Trying for a K1 after 1 visit together ( Unless it was for months or years) isn't going to go anywhere come interview time . From all the posts I have read on VJ from people dealing with the Ghana embassy/consulate it is very rarely a good post. I am not trying to say it's a waste of time, but it is a difficult road ahead. Know this going in, and be ready to dig in and not give up. I wish you the best of luck, and make sure you check out the local Ghana forum for peoples recommendations and help specific to the embassy.

We won’t be working to attain a visa from Ghana, he is from Nigeria so we will be trying to get a visa for him to the US from Nigeria. I know the odds are not in our favor but any help or tips on how to increase our odds and how to start the process is what we’re looking for.

Still ranks up there as difficult, but I was just looking at the consulate reviews and it seems an approval comes out every so often. Lots of time together and anything that shows a legitimate relationship is the two number 1 things to do ( Anywhere really). Look for any red flags in your case, Big age difference, different religious beliefs, etc. and what you can do to overcome them. Study the posts on here, and you will be an expert pretty soon in what they expect and look for. This is just a small sampling of people going thru the process, but it still provides excellent information.
