Insurance Information before Interview for Parents

Hello all,

My parents are having their interview next month in Mumbai. Can anyone please share what insurance you have purchased before interview? One of the suggestions I have received is that it would be prudent to have an insurance quotation before the interview.

My parents are 70+ with diabetes so am a little worried with the public charge ruling. Any insurance suggestions that I can get a quote on and send that information with them? Any recent experience that you can share will also be very helpful.

Thank you!

Instead of something for the interview, there is relatively cheap new immigrant insurance, but coverage is limited and would not cover pre existing conditions,. I would arm them with details of the arrangements they will have in force once they are here, that I think is more important that the temporary stuff.

ok thank you! But wouldnt the CO want to have something in more details? My parents are both diabetic and I was under the impression that having some paperwork that says will also cover pre-existing conditions would be helpful.

Please let me know if you or anyone have recent experience with showing some details. Otherwise we are preparing to explain should a question be asked.

Presumably you already have done the research and have a plan in place to insure them from Day 1 that they arrive here, with enough money to do so. With pre-existing conditions, and especially a chronic condition that is infamous for its high cost of care, presumably you are evaluating their coverage options with an eye not only to premiums but also to exclusions and out of pocket costs, and can afford to pay those amounts as well. This is what they need to evidence at their interview: that you have done the research and have selected a plan, are ready to trigger it, and can afford to maintain it for the foreseeable future.

Not familiar with that one but usually coverage where provided s limited to acute onset of a pre existing condition subject to an inner limit.

That’s indeed what it seems to be. It also seems to be visitor insurance unless there are other plans than the main one.

I have seen effectively the same cover sold under different handles to new immigrants and visitors, usually there is a time limit of a year and obviously with immigrants and assuming you expect them to love sometime that is just at best an interim cover until something else is sorted out.

It’s the “something else” that is usually the (expensive) issue for this demographic. This is the holding pattern, not the solution - and they clearly are not in line for employer insurance.
