Hello, my parents-in-law already filed for N-400 for US citizenship.  Since coming here to US, they haven't worked and never had an income.  We supported them all throughout these years.  There's a question in the N-400 that asks "Have you EVER not filed income taxes....."  But since they haven't worked here and they are both seniors, will it cause a problem with their US citizenship application?  What are the documents that they need to provide to support their claims?

Thanks in advance and Happy Saturday!

No problem at all. Just write a letter and explain why they not filed income tax.

Thanks for your reply.   They just put it on their application  as "unemployed".  Will they ask for more evidence?  When do we write the letter? When they ask for it? TIA.

So your parents received no interest or stock dividend or pension payments or capital gains on investments?

Thanks for your reply.  No investments, stock dividends or any pension.  They came here with only $200 in their pockets.    We supported them since  coming over here in US.  They didn't work also because of their age and the fact that they don't speak English quite well.

The instructions say

If you answer “Yes” to any of the questions in Item Numbers 1. - 44. in this part, include a typed or printed explanation on a separate sheet of paper.

On the paper, type—

———-

NAME

Additional Information

Part 12

7 A. Have you EVER not filed a Federal, state, or local tax return since you became a lawful permanent  resident?

I have never filed a US tax return because I have never worked in the US, nor have any investments, pensions, or other income to report. I have never met the IRS criteria for filing.

———————

Then add that extra page to the end of the application form.
