Additional DHS Approval for Driver's License???

Has anybody else been told they need additional DHS approval to issue their driver's license when they have their green card? My daughter passed her written test and driver's test and when we went to the DFA to get the driver's license issued we were told she needed additional DHS approval! That was lask week Tuesday, we went again today and got told the same thing. I asked why this hadn't been the case with me as we have the same documents and I was told they had no idea why it happened and that we would have to wait for DHS approval? This seems like overkill when we had to get DHS approval to get the green card and SSN to begin with.!

Maybe they should dig out their procedure manual from which they are getting this information so they can tell you why you need additional DHS approval. Sounds weird to me...

Wow! I'm surprised at how difficult it is to obtain a DL in some states.

In MI you don't have to have a GC or even show proof of applying for one to get a DL. We asked the SOS how to apply for a DL and all my husband needs is 3 proofs of ID (one showing our home address) plus take the necessary written and road tests.

I think FL is flexible because there are so many immigrants.

However, if you don't have papers then you can't get a DL.

Tennessee has a 'driver's certificate' for persons who are here legally but don't yet have their green card. Its exactly the same as a driver's license, except you can't use it for identification purposes.

Just go back and talk to a different person. A Green Card and a SS card should be all you need to get a drivers license (apart from stuff like proof of local address). There is no further "DHS approval" you can get.

When my now husband went to get his drivers license (@ KCMO) they issued him one with the I-94 expiration (August '07). They won't go further than that. I wonder if we need to wait for his GC to get one for longer time?
