A Montana judge hit 2 offenders with a deeply fitting punishment for stolen valor

Aside from 441 hours of community service apiece (one for each Montanan killed in combat since the Korean War), the two must both hand-write obituaries for the 40 Montanans killed in the U.S. military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan and hand-write the names of all 6,756 U.S. service members killed in those wars.

In addition, the two must stand at the Montana Veterans Memorial in Great Falls wearing a placard that says, "I am a liar. I am not a veteran. I stole valor. I have dishonored all veterans," for eight hours on each Memorial Day and Veterans Day, according to the Associated Press.

   I agree with everything except the last part. I realize it was a stupid and selfish act, but I don't think wearing signs and humiliating themselves is an effective punishment. Nor do I think humiliating someone is an effective way to teach them about respect.

 

   I would have liked to have seen it more like mandatory work to help disabled veterans or something like that. That would teach more about what respect is and also hopefully show them what it actually means to sacrifice everything in the service of your country.

I tend to agree, the last part is a bit too “Scarlet Letter” for my taste.

  I always thought poetic justice is best left to God or fate or random chance or whatever it may be. Humans are just not very good at it.
