Alcohol exemption by car

Someone remind me since it's been a while traveling to Canada by car....

 

Is the personal exemption for bringing alcohol into Canada per adult, or per family?

 

My husband and I were planning on bringing 1 bottle of Jack and 1 bottle of Chivas Regal for my dad, purchased at Duty-Free...now I'm wondering if I'm able to bring both.

U.S. citizens crossing the border into Canada to visit are allowed to bring the following item quantities into Canada duty free: 1.5 liters of wine, or 1.14 liters (40 ounces) of liquor, or 24 cans or bottles of beer. 1 carton (200 cigarettes), up to 50 cigars, and 200g of loose tobacco.

I know that part.

 

Doesn't really answer the question I'm asking in my post, though, unfortunately, as to whether it's explicitly per person or per family.

 

I want to assume it's per adult---but I've learned not to assume anything when it comes to CBP lol

it is by messurement of liters and you can add the liters as i didn't see you post the amount in each bottle

I don't believe personal exemptions are transferable to/from another adult.

 

Hoping anyone who's recently traveled to Canada via car can comment.

Exemption is per adult. If you are still unsure, you can call CBSA tomorrow, they are very helpful 506-636-5064. 

Note that personal exemption is for alcohol you are planning to drink yourself, or share with others. Gifts are not exempt. But I am sure you were planning to taste these bottles, right?

Thanks ladies!  I think the last time I brought alcohol into Canada, I was in my 20s so I'm a bit rusty as to the ins and outs/exemption rules.

 

Yes, we will be drinking with him from those bottles as we celebrate a milestone--and leaving the rest (if there's any left-over, that is!).

You can bring back up to 1.5 litres of wine OR 1.14 litres of alcoholic beverages OR up to 8.5 litres of beer.

 

This is per adult. Usually when I would travel with friends, we'd divide the booze purchases amongst the group so the ones who didn't buy any would claim the extras.

Thanks all---I think my confusion with this started from remembering Duty-Free asking for the licence plate of the car (again, this was back in the day so not sure if they still do this) when checking out...it made me begin to wonder if it was regulated per *car/family* then, as opposed to per adult.

 

I appreciate all the answers.
