Hey everyone,

How about a daily diary of everything we ate for the day - published here in this thread? This will force us to really look at what we're eating and let others give suggestions or tips. :star:

For example:

This morning I had:

16oz bottle of iced tea sweetened with sugar

slice of banana bread

several hands full of roasted and salted sunflower seeds

Oh my god if we all did that this thread would get pretty danged boring. Well, it might be time to seek out a dieter message board for that...

Alright, I had two pounds more on me this morning, so right now I'm pretty frustrated.

Still trying to figure out when I was bad in the last couple of days...

I was up late last night and saw this doctor on PBS...Mark A. Hyman, M.D.

http://www.ultrametabolism.com/dr-hyman

At first I thought it was just a hokey infomercial but what he had to say was intriguing and valid.

Want an optimally functioning metabolism? You won't get it by dieting. The key, instead, is strategic eating.

That strategy involves attention to quality, rather than quantity. Learning to eat the right foods-in the right amounts-for your own personal genetic makeup is infinitely more important than counting calories and fat grams. And efficient, strategic exercise is far more beneficial than grueling sessions at the gym. Most popular diets work against the body's natural rhythms. I teach you how to work with them, allowing your body to function the way it was meant to.

UltraMetabolism is based on the groundbreaking new science of functional medicine, which focuses on fixes the underlying problems that cause weight gain and disease, rather than focusing on fixing just the systems. Functional medicine brings cutting edge science that previously was scattered in various laboratories throughout the world to the mainstream. Other fad diets are based on an old, outdated, and proven ineffective methodology.

He says these are all myths about diet and weight loss.

Myth 1: Eat less + exercise more = weight loss

Myth 2: You can control weight by counting calories

Myth 3: Eating fat makes you fat

Myth 4: Eating no-carb or low-carb will make you thin

Myth 5: Skipping meals helps you lose weight

Myth 6: The French paradox meets the American paradox

Myth 7: Food politics: Government and industry are the guardians of our health

Thanks, Steve..interesting. I could probably buy into all of those except for myth 1. No one will ever tellme that eating less junk and exercising more won't equal weight loss. I've done it. Thanks for the article. :) M.

YAY on the pounds, Aymerlu! I haven't lost any yet, but I didn't really expect to this soon. I need to buckle down and start exercising instead of thinking of reasons not to. (Even though it's unintentional, I'm sure that's what I'm doing, aside from the times I do really feel rotten lately...which isn't *all* the time, of course!)

So great to see people still joining the thread...we should have a big, big group here! Lotsa Losers on VJ...with me being one of the biggest... Hehehehehe. Hopefully be a reallllllllllly big loser before it's all over...

Daniel, Hey! I would love to swim for exercise too...it's a fun way to be able to do it...and that's a sure fire way of sticking with something I guess...if you can make it fun too....but alas, no pool right near us. That's why for some of my exercise I think I'm going to blast some music (or even just turn up my mp3 player if everyone is sleeping in the am!) and dance, dance, dance! I loveeeee to dance (but not sooooo much in public! ) so that should be a good way for me. Corey just got pair of rollerblades, and I'm thinking of getting a pair and doing that with him too. Any idea how difficult it would be for me to learn anyone? I used to love to rollerskate, but I've never actually tried the blades.

A lot of my exercise is going to mainly be walking, I guess...it will be key for me to have some good music. What are some of your fave workout songs...anyone? I think just for kicks I will have Craig download Eye of the Tiger for me..... maybe all the Rocky theme song music....:P

Just wanted to remind everyone...especially now that we're getting into summer....IF you like it...watermelon, watermelon, watermelon!!! Hardly any calories, yummy, and soooooooooo filling. I should know...I just had some! Only thing I have to watch with that is that I like it with salt...not so healthy! Even w/o salt I like it too though, so that's going to be one of my healthy, low cal staples for summer probably.

Hope everyone is having some success...even with the small things. Like you said, Alex...working out in some way, shape or form is key...and then just watching what you eat. Don't have to starve. That's the most encouraging thing to me last time I lost 50 pounds...I ate absolutely everything I wanted to...just much less of it than I was used to eating. If you get the portion control thing down you can still pretty much eat anything.

I'm going to add some links to some sites I like within the next couple of days too. How is everyone else doing? What have you had a hard time with, what have you done right??? Congrats..bigtime...to those of you who have actually lost pounds already!!!!

OH PS...I know I'm droning on now, but one more thing! If I get this job tomorrow (in the other thread) they have a contest each summer...this year it's whoever loses weight gets a ticket per pound lost...they have some great prizes I guess, and each ticket you have gets entered into a drawing at the end of the contest to win the stuff...cool idea, hey...and help to get the employees fit...I loved it and will certainly participate if I still can, if I get hired!!!! :) M.

PS AGAIN... :P What *I* have done right...havbe only had a couple of Cokes in the last week, and I've been drinking well over 100 oz. of water a day...effortlessly. Luckily for me, I love water! :)

Oh yeah!!

I didn't want this to get lost in the blathering of my last post, so here's a new one. I started a thread a few months ago about healthy food, recipes, etc...and I *will* be revisiting that...but for those of us on this thread now...I would really, really like to know *and* appreciate if you would post your favorite:

1/healthy and/OR low cal snacks. This is a biggie for me. I have the baby carrot sticks and all that jazz...but when I want a treat OR just a little something..more...what do you have that's not bad or even...*GASP* good...healthwise. I mentioned watermelon in my last post. Any fruits/veg are good, but I'm looking for some ideas other than that...unless you incorporate fruit/veg some other way INTO a dish....

2/healthy and/or low cal meals. Any meal is fine at all, but particularly something that's not too bad for the whole family to eat on the busy nights...you know, late in from work, don't want to eat a junky meal just because it's fast...

Maybe we can share some ideas?

My favorite "not bad for you" on the go meal is cod or tilapia fish...just bake with some milk over it (and usually butter, but I can forego that!) and lemon slices, seasonings...and YUM! Add a veg (and usually fries, but not so much now!) and good to go...very fast, good meal. :)

From what I understood in his explanation on the program, he's saying that calorie counting and trying to reduce your caloric intake is setting yourself up for failure. He comes from an interesting angle - he believes that our bodies have the natural tendency/where-with-all to not have excess fat provided we're eating the right kinds of foods.

Two big ingredients that actually have only been in our food for the last couple of a decades that he says show a direct connection between the high incidents of type 2 diabetes, especially in children are .... high fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (trans fats). Both are factory created and molecularly altered which trick or confuse our body's metabolism, and they are in EVERYTHING nowadays!

Just elminating foods in your diet that contain either of those ingredients would mage a huge difference, but I know it's really difficult to find processed food that doesn't contain either.

I don't agree with the low carb idea for losing weight (Atkins) - excess intake of protein is really hard on your liver and you'll lose a lot of energy if you're not eating enough carbs. Just switching to whole grains and green leafy vegetables (complex carbs) actually triggers the metabolism to assimilate food a lot better.
