Hi Everyone,

I am legally married in Senegal and the U.S. Embassy said I shouldn't have an issue changing to my married name. Has anyone had any issues changing to their married names here in the states? I know I have to go to the Social Security office/registry of motor vehicles/bank accounts and what not, I am just hoping not to have any any issues.

No issues, but as we discuss here quite often, foreign females getting spouse visas will avoid all that hassle by changing their name and getting new passports in their own country before the visa interview.  US Citizens marrying abroad have no more issues changing their names after marriage than they would if they married in the US.  Are you the USC, or foreigner?

I am the USC. I just want it to be an easy process. I would like me to have my name changed for when I submit and petition for my husband to come in May.

Changing your name is an easy process, but even if it's not, do it if that's what you want to do.  You DO NOT have to complete the name change before filing the petition USING the married name.  If you WANT to complete the name change first, that's your choice, but it is not necessary.

Oh okay. I thought in order to be valid I had to use my married name. Thank you for your input

In order for what to be valid?  If you plan to change your family name based on marriage, do it.  If you do not want to, don't.  If you are going to, the paperwork does not need to be complete BEFORE you file the petition.  Just go ahead and use the married name on the petition if that's what you want EVEN IF, you have taken zero action to get new ID.  You can take care of the SS, DL, Passport etc. later.  Really.

Married name vs Maiden Name is a choice, not a requirement.

The only "difficulty" I had changing my name here in the states, was having to wait 24 hours after changing my name at SS before I could change it at the DMV because it takes a day before the name change goes into the national system (or something like that, can't remember exactly what they said), and my DMV only taking appointments so I had to wait a week. But that's only because my DMV doesn't take walk-ins. If they did walk-ins I would have been able to change my license next day after changing it at the social security office. Changing your name at social security is extremely easy. You maybe have to wait a bit at the office but once you get called up you just hand them the marriage certificate, and bam, it's done, a signed letter from the SS office for you to use as name change proof for your job, DMV, and whatnot to use while waiting for your SS card, and new SS card shipped in 1-3 weeks.
