How long will the consulate usually hold a passport for? Our case is currently in Administrative Processing. Interview date was November 2. We were handed a 221g paper BUT our case is not standing in 221g status with the consulate. They asked for 2 additional documents and the passport to be sent to them via courier. The documents were received by them on November 23. Last “update” for the case was November 30.

They will hold the passport til the are done with what ever the AP is concerning has been resolved. They need the passport to issue the visa. You can request it back if it is needed to travel but it can delay the process.

Ours was delayed a month after interview for missing documents until issued

When you sent the documents over, did the consulate request the passport as well?

Was your case in Admin Processing for a month starting from the day the consulate received your missing documents ?

They kept his passport after his interview. It was in admin processing after his interview approval and then two weeks longer once they finally  received the documents

We are in the same situation unfortunately. Our interview was exactly 2 months ago tomorrow and they have had passport and required documents for a month now! They did need a letter to extend the petition after the fact and they have had that now for 12 days. Hoping to hear something soon!

No one can say with any certainty when your visa will be issued. Administrative processing is at its most frustrating when it goes on for several months. Typically this is caused by a consular post waiting for a response on some form of advisory opinion. Although, as was experienced in 2014 and 2015, processing delays may also result from system failures in the Consular Consolidated Database (CCD) and more recently due to additional administrative hurdles such as the recent flurry of executive orders regarding visa issuance. We have seen some who have experienced very long delays sometimes beyond a year. But those are rare. I hate to sing the same tune but patience is what is needed.
