Woman fined over dropped crisps A council has apologised for issuing an £80 litter fine after a toddler dropped two crisps on the pavement.

Barbara Jubb's granddaughter, two-year-old Emily, dropped a packet of Quavers in Crawley, West Sussex.

Mrs Jubb, 57, picked up the bag but kicked two stray crisps into the gutter - and was given an on-the-spot fine by two council wardens.

"We have apologised to the family for being overzealous and are happy to have cancelled the fine," said the council.

Spotted by warden

Mrs Jubb, her daughter Selena and Emily were waiting at a bus stop to return home to Tilgate after a hospital appointment when they were spotted by one of the wardens.

"She promptly brought out her badge and said, 'You are being fined'," said Mrs Jubb.

"I was absolutely gobsmacked."

Emily's mother, Selena, said; "I thought Jeremy Beadle was going to pop out - it was that stupid.

"People at the bus stop couldn't believe what was going on."

Crawley Borough Council said it made no apology for targeting people making a mess of its streets. "People have a responsibility not to drop litter," said Councillor Beryl Mecrow.

It means 'shocked'.

I agree that something needs to be done about litter, but they could have asked her to pick up the crisps and warned her not to litter again. Giving her an £80 fine is taking the piss.

I had a can of beer while sat on the sea wall in Florida (100 degrees), and a bloated cop with alien type sunglasses and a George Bush walk, was ready to pistol whip me...

Apparently its illegal. I accept foreign laws so I didn't take him to task over the 21st amendment even though I was being treated like the 13th hadnt been passed either.

Perhaps the chip droppers were Americans and didn't understand the local laws ?

And, animal lovers, what about the starving pigeons if nobody drops chips ? little cuties.

I hate litterbugs though and I think they should be water boarded at a secret facility somewhere in eastern europe and then sent to Guantanamo once their spirits have been broken

I must disagree with Tony Blair that Britain is the best country in the world - due to litter mainly- and I want to go somewhere that really gets to grips with violators- there should be an exception to the human rights act for kids who throw coke cans and crisp bags into my garden - just handing then over to a paedophile gang is too good for them...

It would be someone from England no doubt... the kids here are all so busy being tought NOT to be fatist, ageist ,thickoist,lazyist,irresponsiblyist, drippynoseist etc that they aren't even TOLD not to throw trash - it's a blizzard of popsicle wrappers etc at 4pm when a herd of them are walking down the street... A few years in the salt mines would cure that.

It just needs someone to say it's 'not green' and the impressionable brainwashed little morons would stop it straight away...

It isnt their fault really - it all changed when I was leaving school in 65 - we had fantastic teachers - clean educated and principled - but the latest one had jam jar bottom glasses and a dirty raincoat tied round the waste with string and came across the park past the boys toilets every day - England was finished from that day on....

grumble grumble winge winge - country going to the dogs etc - stick em in the army for 2 years and when/if they come out at age 7 they will have learned not to litter !

My USC wife has been here since October working in a big company and only 'twigs' one word in 5 I reckon

You will be pleased to know that Iceland is like the USA - they retain the ancient Danish language while the home country's language has moved on .... nobody here uses 'gotten' which went out just after the pilgrims left but it is common in American - there are many more examples and American sounds more like 17th century English to me - it's not a criticism by the way as I know you guys (from guy fawkes - 1600's) are sensitive about that...

On the other hand - I had to have 'dibs' explained - - the English equivalent is 'bags me'
