Accent marks on I-130

Hello,

my husband is from sweden and we are filling out the i-130 forms. We are confused how to fill out his portion as far as use of accent marks and Diacriticals. Our last name has an ö in and our address abroad has an ä in it. I’ve asked many different Facebook groups and have received mixed answers. Some say to write it exactly as how it’s written in passport. Does anyone have an insight of what to do here? Sjögren/Sjogren Trastvägen/Trastvagen. Thanks in advance!

Then why do they say to fill it out exactly as it appears in your passport? This confuses me. Someone else has to have been through this. I mean should I write it exactly as it appears in passport and then how it is written when he gets his ESTA in the “other names used?”

The US doesn't recognize accent marks in official paperwork. My son's name has an accent in France (and on all his official French documents), but no accent in his US documents. I'd write it without the accent marks.

The confusing part for me is that sometimes I get my name (that includes an A with two dots, ie. an Ä) written with A, sometimes with AE. Like at the bottom of my passport (the “code” part) it uses AE.

 

Even had a TSA officer ask me about this once as my boarding pass on a flight departing from the US had my name with AE, yet my passport reads with A with two dots (A for ’Mericans).

 

I think that me and wife put in my name with an A in the I-130, yet in the call-up e-mail for an interview my name is with an AE 😳
