Prince Harry not to serve in Iraq

Prince Harry will not be sent to Iraq, the head of the British Army has said.

The Prince had previously stated that he wanted to be involved in active service with his unit.

But the Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt, has confirmed the Prince will not go with his regiment, the Blues and Royals. BBC defence correspondent Paul Adams said the MoD would have taken account of reports the insurgents in Iraq planned to target the Prince.

awwww thats so sad, they planned to target him the same as they target the US soilders. IMO hes not better than the other soilders over there

He should go too, why should other soldiers be there fighting and not him. He should not be treated any different.

Well, it's a legitimate argument...it kinda makes his entire squad/platoon a target. Not to mention it would invite more insurgents to the area where security is far better than anywhere else.

Hmmm - and I thought the point of the Princes doing military service was to set some sort of example...

Seems to me that if you're going to join the armed forces it stands to reason that you would have to automatically cede your right to any sort of "protected" status. Granted its not Harry's decision, but even if he were to have gone to Iraq and by chance gotten killed out there - would his death really be more tragic than Darren Smith from Chelmsford, Essex. More public certainly, but still...

Seems to me that if you're going to join the armed forces it stands to reason that you would have to automatically cede your right to any sort of "protected" status. Granted its not Harry's decision, but even if he were to have gone to Iraq and by chance gotten killed out there - would his death really be more tragic than Darren Smith from Chelmsford, Essex. More public certainly, but still...

or perhaps the threats made against him were deemed credible and it was decided it was not worth the risk. or would you prefer to see him killed or even captured, maybe a video of him being beheaded on tv to satisfy your sense of "example" and proof of "unprotected" status?

one could argue that the terrist have won. they scared a powerful country into not sending a prince over to fight.

i know times have changed, but aren't royals royal becasue they were mean fighting s.o.b.s in the first place?
