Hi everyone!

So my husband and i got married in the US when i was there on a K1 visa. I changed my name to his last name on my social security card and got a drivers license in my married name.

A family emergency made me go back to Germany before I got my greencard and it’s now a year later and our i130 just got approved by USCIS.

My passport is still in my maiden name and I won’t be able to change it unless my husband is present with me at the courthouse to get a German marriage certificate. However he won’t be able to visit before my interview and my current passport is expiring soon.

Would it be okay if I got a new passport in my maiden name and used it for the visa and greencard even though my social security card has my married name on it?

I know that I would have to pay a fee to change the name on the greencard later on but I wouldn’t mind that.

I would think you will be fine because your Social Security card is not required to travel. It's never asked for that I have ever heard of at any POE. I have been thru just about every one and never been asked for my SS card. It would be more important that the name on your green card, and passport and Plane ticket all match.

Here on a K1? Need married and a Certificate in hand within a few hours? I'm here to help. Come to Vegas and I'll marry you Vegas style!!   Visa Journey members are always FREE for my services. I know the costs involved in this whole game of immigration, and if I can save you some money I will!

Correct, and be aware that until you change both the passport and green card, all you travel should be booked in the passport name.

Thanks for your answer!

My police clearance is going to be in my maiden name too but that’s probably not a problem? And do you know which name to use when I fill out the DS260?
