Dear VisaJourney members,

You website is much of help!!
I returned yesterday to my country after being in the United States for 3 days to activate my visa and become United States Lawful Permanent Resident(LPR). The United States address that I gave(to send me the GC) is of my uncle.

The problem is that my uncle in early October will change house.

1 - Will my GC and SSN being mailed until that time? If not, then they may be received by the new house owner.

2 - After I  activated GC and SSN at United States airport, after how much time GC and SSN will be mailed to United States address?
3 - In case that my uncle won’t receive them until early October, will I lose my LPR status(because I lost them), or have penalties, or get more questioned when I will return back to United States next year?

Can they issue me new GC and SSN and mail them to my country?
4 - was it better when I visited the United States 4 days ago, to have gone to the Social Security Office to give me my SSN(and not wait for it to be mailed)? I didn’t thought about it when I visited the United States.

I will need the SSN to file tax at end 2018.

I will wait for your helpful answers.

Regards,
Sabhay

The SSN card should come before that, the green card may or may not. It may or may not be returned to USCIS. You can also ask the new resident to let your uncle know if mail arrives - the USPS will not forward USCIS mail so that won't work.  If it is not given to your uncle or returned to USCIS and you have to apply for a replacement - will be seen as your fault due to incorrect address - you'll need to apply for a replacement, you'll need to get biometrics done and pay for that and the new card (I belie that totals about $575??)

The plastic green card is not your status, it is evidence of your status. You already have a temporary green card valid for one year from your date of landing, stamped in your passport (read the small print at the bottom of your immigrant visa).

They do not mail them outside the US. The assumption is that you are resident in the US. (On that note, I hope you are not planning to be gone too long before you return for good.)

By the way - I assume you paid the $220 green card fee?

Is this a serious question, or is one of the MODS having fun.

Or I might be wrong, never heard of anyone coming in to activate the Visa and become a LPR and leave 3 days later.

It's a common situation for DV selectees, who have much shorter notice to make a move than family based immigrants and obviously usually don't have fiance, spouse, child/parent etc waiting for them.

Ok, guess that makes sense. Don't you have 6 months roughly to enter on that Visa. I'm pretty sure I could shore up my life and move in half that time.

well, if you don't have to worry about things like selling property and investments (possibly from a country with exchange control where just getting your money out can be a 6-month process) and uprooting kids from school in the middle of a school year etc, all the while trying to figure out where you will move to that you can get a decent job and decent schools etc, then maybe. Obviously the less ties, less responsibilities and less assets you have, the easier it is.

Bear in mind you only get about 6 weeks notice till interview and often don't know if you will actually get the visa, so there's only so much preparation you can do in advance.

Hi, thank you for responding. Very good information I appreciate it.

In case my GC/SSN is lost/sent to the new house owner, when it is better to contact USCIS or other United States department to inform them(that I lost the GC/SSN)? - while outside the United States or when I return back to United States in next year?

Also in October when my uncle changes home, should I contact USCIS that I changed address or do this when I will go to the United States?

The good is that I paid the $220 in early August before traveling to United States. The bad is that I didn't visit the local Social Security Office to get the SSN in hand when I visited US, and to being having it now.

Have a nice day. Regards, Sabhay
