Quick question for clarification since we are approaching the time to file for ROC. At what point in the process would you need to get a 551 stamp? thanks for the help.

Once you file roc u should get an extension letter. That will make your two year green card valid again for the length of time the letter is for. Once the extension letter is set to expire then you will need to get a 551 stamp while waiting for the 10 year green card to be approved.

When you file ROC you will receive an extension letter, which will be for either 12 or 18 months.  Prior to your extension letter expiration date you will need to visit your local office and ask for the passport stamp if you are planning on traveling out of the country.

Some people do it, some don't, we chose not to because we didn't have the need for it.

Chances are you may be receiving an NOA1 with 18-month extension when you file. The cases are backed up and they know it takes more than 12 months to process your ROC.
