Passport Name Change - Is this a problem?

My husband is removing conditions and has an extension letter. His green card and extension letter are in his married name. He dropped his second last name when marrying me. We have always gotten tickets to his home country in his married name with no issue, though it is different than his passport.

Today at the airport (leaving the US) a ticket agent gave him some grief before changing the name on his flight ticket to match his foreign passport. She said he could not fly internationally if his passport names didn't match. That makes sense. However, a few minutes later, she asked if my husband would be getting a US passport on his (2ish week) trip overseas. I explained that no, but he is looking forward to it when he becomes a citizen hopefully next year. (We had JUST finished establishing his legal permanent residence..CLEARLY he is not a US citizen..??)

Now I am worried that he will not be able to get back in to the US. Should we call the airline and change his ticket to his maiden name? We haven't for the past several flights with zero issues. The lady obviously was not clearly informed, but now I'm feeling a bit panicky. Thoughts?

Always have to book tickets in passport name.

Bring marriage certificate copy so they don’t give you problems.

So it won't matter if the passport name is different than the green card?

He has a copy of the marriage certificate but now I'm wondering if I should have sent an original

Also, it seems strange that it hasn't been mentioned on any of his previous flights

Ticket always have to match the name in the passport. They can deny you to board otherwise. Doesn't matter what the name on the Green Card says. That is why you bring your marriage certificate, to show the name change.
