Good day!

I would recommend you renewing your passport in Hong Kong.

Chinese foreign posts do not issue SAR passports. All they do is to accept your application and send them back to Hong Kong, and they charge an extra fee.

Save yourself a trip, money and delay!

You can lodge your renewal application directly with Immigration Department. Send your passport back to Hong Kong, pay the fee and they will send it back to your address in the US.

Are you also a British National? you can renew your UK passport here in the US.

Yea I plan to go back to Hong Kong in Feb 2018 for the CNY and also renew my passport by then. But I'm worry about if I can leave the US with my 'almost expired' passport in Feb 2019 since my passport will expire in May 2019?

"You can lodge your renewal application directly with Immigration Department. Send your passport back to Hong Kong, pay the fee and they will send it back to your address in the US" <--- can i do that? Cos I emailed the HK immigration they said I can just send the application online but I need to go back to Hong Kong to pick up the passport in person.

I had BNO passport before but haven't renew it for a loooooooooong long time

You can leave the US with your unexpired passport. so it's all good.

It takes 10 business days for Immigration Department to issue your new Hong Kong passport, and they do not expedite applications unless it's life and death. so count your days and CNY holidays and see if you have enough time to renew your passport.

You can definitely renew your passport via post, I just realized you have to pick up your passport in person in Hong Kong, that makes zero sense. How could you travel home from abroad without a passport?

If you are a US permanent resident, you can apply for a Travel Document,(re-entry permit) in lieu of your SAR passport, and when you return HK, you can use your HK Permanent Resident ID at e-channel to enter HK.

BNO status doesn't expire, so even if your UK passport had expired a long time ago, you can still renew it. and of course you can use your BNO to board plane. (

I noticed you are in Montana, how on earth did a Hong Kong girl end up in Montana? I must be love, huh?

I've been to Helena and it is absolutely gorgeous! Sky is really blue and grass is really green. what a luxury for us Hong Kongers!

Oh thanks! I was so scared I can't leave US if my passport is under 6 months valid.

Haha i also don't understand the 'must pick up in person' statement, maybe they want to see if you are the one who is the same as the passport photo make sure the passport wasn't being stolen or something? lol

I emailed the China embassy to check how the renewal process works, they said I have to fly there to Washington D.C. to apply it in person, and for pick up, I can arrange someone else to pick up for me (they cannot mail the new passport to me =.=)

I'm waiting for my AOS interview which going to happen next month, so i think I can use my Green card to back to USA?

Oh i didn't know about the BNO thing, I will defo grab it with me back to US when i back to Hong Kong cos I thought there's no point to grab an expired passport with me. haha

You are correct, love brought me here in Montana.   I live here in Great Falls, they also called it "Big Sky", and you'll never see that much stars and clear sky in Hong Kong for sure. it's so different from Hong Kong, but Im enjoying it (less stress for sure)!

yep, the whole thing makes no sense. I think the nearest Chinese consulate is San Francisco, again, that is a long long trip.

I am surprised your AOS interview is going this fast! I definitely do hope that you will have your GC soon!

haha. I mean, DC is worth visiting if you haven't been.

When I was in Montana, I did not meet a single Asian!  Do they have American Chinese restaurant in your city? I bet you miss our hometown food :)

I became a citizen yesterday, all I can tell you is although immigration is long long journey, but have patience and you will eventually see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Best of luck.
