DS2019 Permanent residency mistake

Greetings sir/madam. I am a phd student at university of Udine Italy and accepted as J1 scholar at university of New Orleans. I am citizen and permanent resident of Pakistan but my legal status in Itlay is temporary study visa which I renew every year. When I was applying for DS2019, I mentioned Italy as permanent resident(i made this mistake because I thought that I will be applying visa in Italy) while born in and citizen of Pakistan.

Now I am filling DS 160. While filling ds160, it asks if I have permanent resident of a country other than my country of origin(which is pakistan in my case ) which actually I don't have. Is it really a big mistake that can cost me visa rejection if DS2019  has Italy as my permanent residence while DS160  will have Pakistan as permanent residency only  ?

Not my area of knowledge per say; but it could affect it yes. I would assume that applying for a J-1, like any visa, must be done from the country you have a legal residency of. If you are just temporary there in Italy, you may not even be able to process through that US embassy but would in fact have to do it from Pakistan instead. So again, not my normal area; but yes this could definately affect how this gets processed.

 

Hopefully someone with better experience and knowledge on this specific type o thing can assist you better.

How temporary? And how many years have you been renewing it? 

 

It is usually acceptable to apply for a US visa (not sure about J1 application criteria) as long as you're in another country legally. But saying Italy when you should have said Pakistan could be an issue. The ds2019 and ds160 would not match.

I have been renewing it from the past 5 years but this does not qualify me as permanent resident in italy. On my DS2019 , it is already mention that i am the citizen of pakistan and also has permanent residence in italy which is not the case(this is my mistake). While filling DS 160 it specifically ask me if i have permanent residence of a country other than the country of my origin(which is pakistan). If i write no to this question, my ds2016 and ds160 will not be matched. and my supervisor from the host university is also bit reluctant and i cannot really insist him to rectify this error and send me the new one. He infect suggested me to apply with same one. BUt i am afraid it will cost me visa rejection. what is your opinion ? do you know someone who has been in the same situation as mine and granted visa?

Permanent residency can be defined differently in different countries. Yours was an honest mistake. You can probably correct it at the interview. Perhaps you can add a note to DS160, stating that you've been living in Italy for 5 years? (I'm assuming you can file in Italy at all.)

Well, you're supposed to research carefully before filling out the form(s).

There is no "honest" mistakes or "dishonest" mistakes per se. It can be considered a lie for your own advantage. Being an Italian PR grants a lot of privilege than being a Pakistan PR. Who knows if the J1 was granted based on the fact that they need an Italian student?

I recommend you to fill out the DS160 with your "true" information and be ready to explain it to the interviewer. Don't make any more mistake. Submit the package and hope for the best.

I think that the DS 2019 might have asked you for your permanent address, maybe? I don't remember the DS 2019 asking about being a permanent resident of any country, but I filled that out a long time ago. Also, I know of people that were from country X studying in country Y, and had country Y as the country they had to go back to if they had the 2 year residency requirement. 

 

In the new form you have to fill out, you have to put the correct information.
