Hi Guys! I am currently living in the U.S. on a K-1 Visa. My I-94 will expire on August 9, 2018, but we plan on getting married on August 3, 2018.

I understand that applying for a SSN will require a marriage cert. but since we can't get that until after Aug.3, will it be too late to apply then since my I-94 will expire on Aug.9 and SSN will take 7 - 10 days? I was told that you have to apply for your SSN within 2 weeks of your I-94 expiring. Any information you guys can provide would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

No, you don't need a marriage certificate. You are allowed to apply for a SSN with your current passport with visa in it and valid I-94.

If you're the woman in this relationship; apply for it in your maiden name first, then go back after marriage with the same documents + marriage certificate to change your maiden to married.

Just be fast. They won't issue a SSN when there is less than 14 days left on your I-94.

My fiance arrived in the US on July 3, applied for SSN on July 5 and we were married July 6.  All she needed was her passport and i94.  Expecting her card to arrive in a few more days.

Jason

Thank you for the info. Will go tomorrow morning and apply for a SSN.
