Going to Europe 3 weeks after AOS interview...

Hi, I'm here on a K1. I got my EAD and AP and in June is my appointment for the Greencard interview. My husband and I want to go to Germany in July (we are invited to a wedding) for 10 days and now I was just wondering if that could be a problem if I don't receive my Greencard before we leave?!?

I do have my Advance Parole though, but there are only about 3 weeks between the interview and our departure date.

If you get approved at your AOS interview, your Green Card will probably arrive within 2 weeks. And even if your Green Card doesn't arrive before you leave for Germany, you can just use your AP document to get back into the U.S., as long as it hasn't expired.

Thanks! I was just wondering because I read about a few people who were waiting for their Greencard after the interview so that they could leave the country (and especially come back in again after their trip!), but I guess they just didn't have an AP in the first place.

I think there might be a question of your AP's validity if you have already been approved for a green card. It might not be valid anymore? I'm not sure, honestly.

often after approval of aos, the immigration officer would ask to get the ap document and the ead. if this is the case, make sure that your passport gets stamped. it may also be good to ask the immigration officer at the time of interview about what you need if you are travelling in three weeks. perhaps they would not get your ap document or he/she would stamp your passport (some district offices do this routinely and some don't) so you can travel abroad while waiting for the card. the card may arrive in 7-10 days but in some situations it takes a few weeks. there is a lot of variability on when the card is received. i hope this helps.

Yes - make sure and get the stamp in your passport or keep the AP. We are still waiting 5 weeks plus from our AOS interview. Others have been wating months. Good Luck and have fun

I do believe that once they have approved your GC, they take back any and all other forms of immigraiton ID. ie: your EAD and AP documents. If you have neither of those, and they don't stamp your passport, you have nothing to show that you are in the country legally.

If you are approved that day, tell them you are planning a trip out of country and need the stamp, just in case your card doesn't reach you in time.
