I don't suppose it has occurred to you that had the Bush administration not lied its way into war with Iraq most if not all of those 3,000+ soldiers would be alive today, we wouldn't have the image problem we have now, al Qaeda wouldn't have a second country to call its own, we'd have more manpower to devote to the war in Afghanistan, we would be fighting al Qaeda on only one front instead of two, and most cheerfully for you...the Democrats probably would not be in charge of Congress because there would not have been an Iraq war to create such a groundswell of anti-Republican sentiment.

But yeah, go ahead and just blame the "liberals"; everything is their fault.

Great post. This war was a mistake from the start and it went from bad to worse. Any sort of victory is impossible and has been for a long time. Dragging it on only costs more soldiers, civilians, money, and world opinion. Oh well, at least that doesn't embolden the terrorists.

Most of these guys had the same access to the intel that the president had. Most of the governments in Europe were saying the same thing. No one seems to remember all that. Bush & Blair both lied. They just have more (and better) lawyers & PR people to twist meanings, legalities and generally muddy the waters. Support for this "little adventure" was hardly unanimous - either among politicians or the general public.

Dude, the Republicans had control of the Congress and the executive branch for six years and proved that all they could do was make illiterate speeches and ignore the advice of their generals when it came to planning wars.

If they couldn't get it done in the three + years they had, they sure as hell shouldn't blame Congress for making them clean up their crayons and go home. Iraqis don't want us there. We're hamstrung w.r.t. responding to Iran.

Having an exit strategy isn't cutting and running, it's what you're supposed to have in place before you launch a war.

I just love how the Reps know they were wrong to support this dolt and his war and the best they can come up with is to say it's the Dems fault too. Sorry, but that doesn't fly. People thought Iraq had WMD's because that's what they were told by the Bush administration. They ignored (suppressed) info that didn't fit their agenda and promoted the info that did. They also exaggerated the threat of the alleged WMD's. I'm not going to dig up links but people inside and outside the administration have said exactly that. Oh and I can't believe you seriously think a Dem congress person had the same access to intel as the president.

What has this war gotten us? Over 3000 soldiers killed. Many times that in civilians killed. Billions of dollars spent. World opinion at an all-time low. That's what the Iraq war has accomplished. And for what? Safety? If you say yes you're kidding yourself. I'm traveling outside the US this weekend and I can tell you I felt a lot more safe traveling internationally before this war started.

You can call them cowards and have no respect for them but I'd rather have a coward Dem than a war-mongering idiot Rep. November 2008 can't get here fast enough.

Its all well and good wheeling out The Oppressed - reasonably speaking I doubt there's anyone here who is ignorant of the fact that a lot of really bad stuff happened to a lot of people under the old regime.

But still... none of this exactly new - nor is it unique to that country. So I'm not sure why it is constantly brought out in defence of a very controversial policy to go to war. In short, I doubt it has much to do with it at all - it's a (PR-friendly) side-benefit. If we were so offended by what was going on back in the 80's we could have done something about it. We didn't, and neither did anyone else. Point is - if nothing was done about it then, then it seems a little questionable to wheel out a 10-15 year old atrocity as a justification for a war in 2003.

Speaking of which, the claims made by both Bush and Blair related to specific threats against the US and UK, and were couched in language that suggested links to 9/11 - Connections that were subsequently proven to be erroneous and exaggerated.
