I sent in my application of Aos in Aug 2017. They requested more evidence which I sent.  After several calls, my EAD was sent in April 2018. However, it arrived with my name spelt wrongly. I had to it back with documentation for correction.  After few weeks, I got the card in mail and surprisingly with an interview notice scheduled in few weeks.

Mall these while I haven’t worked cos I don’t have an SSN. My husband also did a single tax filing Cos I don’t have SSN. I don’t have insurance too co everything basically revolves around ssn.

Please im really confused, what do I need take along side, cos not having an SSN is literally making me less confident. I have barely few weeks, I’m hoping to get a job, altho I’m evening tmgoing to apply for the ssn tmw which may take a few weeks for the card to come. Please does anyone have any similar experience or any suggestions on how to go about this.

thank you guys!

Do you and your husband have any joint memberships to anything? Pictures, joint bank statements with both your names and even highlighting purchases like tickets and travel, boarding passes or any evidence of traveling together are also good. Plus any gifts and their receipts, bills with both your names. Even though you don't have insurance, find out what insurance your husband can add YOUR name to.

By the way, your husband will need to amend his tax return to "married, filing jointly". He cannot file as "single". Nonresident aliens who don't have an SSN can get something called an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). US citizens can then list their foreign spouses and their ITIN on taxes. However, since you have already applied for an SSN, you don't need an ITIN. But your husband MUST change his tax return after you receive your SSN. He needs to fill this form and mail it. Obviously keep a copy for your records and take it with your husband's tax return to your interview. It's also evidence of your marriage. If the IO asks why he filed single, just explain that it was a mistake since you didn't realize you could have gotten an ITIN and filed jointly from the beginning. A lot of people make this mistake.

Single is not a valid filing option for anybody who was married on the last day of the tax year. He needs to amend his taxes to either MFJ or MFS. On the plus side, he will likely get a decent refund.

Health insurance does not require an SSN.

Being a beneficiary of life insurance, retirement plans, etc. doesn't require an SSN either, nor does a will or emergency medical care document.

Now that you have an EAD, you can apply for a Social Security card. usually this arrives in about a week or so. Then you can use that for joint accounts and such. It won't help with your AOS as it's just now being opened up, but is still useful for most couples anyway, and can be a piece of evidence for ROC later.

Provide the evidence of your relationship that you do have. Don't worry about what you do not have. Show evidence that you actually live together, go out together, etc. just like any other couple.

Wow. Thank you so much, the agent that prepared the tax papers said he couldn’t claim me as a defendant since I had no SSN and a job. The EAD came 3 weeksto the interview, and I’m even on my to the SSN office. From it arriving a week that would probably leave me with less than 2 weekstothe knterview date, can I possibly get all these done before then? Get a job, fix this tax thing and all?

Also, we are sub letting a home, and was looking forward to moving once I started working, and now like the interview came so fast. Although we have our lease and receipts of payments built into the lease, in this case do I still need utilities cos it’s the home owners name.

Thank you for your previous response, I very much appreciate. Thank you

Not sure why your tax agent said it's OK to file single. Fire him and get a new one. Even if he didn't realize the ITIN exists, he should have known your husband can't file as single. But luckily the form 1040X is there and it will fix everything.

As geowrian said in his post above, don't worry about what you don't have. When the SSN comes, take care of what you can and bring whatever you have. You don't need every single possible thing. You need enough and if your relationship has been real from the beginning, you'll have enough.
