Former President George H.W. Bush is in intensive care, a day after a funeral was held for his wife, Barbara Bush, CNN has learned.

Bush, 93, was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital Sunday morning after contracting an infection that spread to his blood, family spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement Monday.
"He is responding to treatments and appears to be recovering. We will issue additional updates as events warrant," said McGrath.
According to a source close to the former Republican President, Bush was admitted to the hospital with an infection that led to sepsis, which can be life-threatening. He was in critical condition, the source said

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Over the weekend my wife and I were talking about how they were one of those couples where you wouldn't be surprised if the surviving spouse follows soon after they lose their life partner.

 

Hopefully that's not the case here though.

I was thinking the same thing. It is pretty common. We'll see what happens. It's a good sign that he is responding to treatment.

I believe in broken heart syndrome. Actress Debbie Reynolds passed away few days after her daughter Carrie Fisher died. But the most memorable one was the parents of former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie. His mom and dad died of heart attacks one hour apart. His dad had a long time illness but mom was unexpected.

On my last cemetery visit, I noticed how many husbands (a bunch) had died just months or weeks after their wives.
