1-Year CR1 visa

Hi.

I have married a US Citizen in January 2017. We have applied for CR1 visa (via consular process) in February 2017, which was issued by local embassy in January 2018 and I entered the US in February.

The catch is, that visa states "Upon endorsement serves as temporary I-555 evidencing permeant residence for 1 year" and that the stamp the CBP officer applied to my passport states expiry date in February 2019.

The office also told be I have to apply for removal of conditionality within 90 dates before this date.

But all the internet sites and forums I have checked state that CR1 should be valid for 2 years and that I should apply for removal of conditionality within 90 dates before 2 years pass.

Thus I am uncertainty about my exact status and when should I undertake further steps.

The I-551 stamp in your passport is valid for 1 year.  I believe this serves as a legal document until your physical green card arrives. Then, you will receive your green card in the mail within few months and that will have 2 years validity.

90 days before the expiry of your conditional green card you will then be eligible to apply for the removal of conditions.

This makes sense...I will wait till I get the actual green card to see expiry date on it.

I have not received it yet, but I have my SSN (it was processed through embassy ), so I was able to get my driving license.

I was under the impression that Direct Consular processing took drastically less time!?

Yes, but only available if the US Citizen is a resident of the foreign spouse's country.

Did the OP not file Directly via Consulate? If so, why did it take him a year? I thought a Year was about the time it takes for a regular process. and direct consular taking only 4 months.

Am I just misunderstanding the OP?

Some the discussion has confused the issue.  No, the OP did not do DCF.  "Consular Processing" is just part of any spouse visa process.  Consulates issue visas.  When filing DCF, one actually files with an overseas USCIS field office, usually adjacent to or housed in a "Consulate".  Consulate is Dept. of State.  USCIS is part of Dept. of Homeland Security.

The "one year" reference has to do with how long the stamp and visa combination will serve as a temporary green card.  It has nothing to do with how long it took to get the visa.

As others  has stated the visa in your passport is also a temporary green card valid for one year or until the actual green card arrives which should not be long I believe my wife got her green card in about a month after arriving in USA . The green card expiration date is 2 year from date of POE. 90 days before and up to  expiration date. you can apply for ROC and receive  10 year Green card
