Had the interview on Monday at 8:30am. We were the first ones off the elevator, and the first immigrant visa number given. It was quick and painless -- three questions! That's it! And were out of there by 9:30am.

They asked how my husband and I met, when we married, and if I'd ever had trouble with the law or immigration/customs.

Then the lady said "Okay, come back tomorrow any time after 2:30pm".

So I went back at 2:30 exactly today and there was no line at all. I got upstairs, went to the window, got my visa and was out of there. It was desserted.

I now more then ever do NOT understand why Montreal took so long to schedule....it was pretty empty! All I can figure is they cut back on staff, since most of the windows weren't even open.

Oh well. I'm in Boston now, we crossed in Vermont, and the guards were all very nice. The guy was joking and laughing with us, and laughed when I asked him what they do when they have immigrants with no hands (he took my fingerprints) and told me about catching a guy at the Mexican boarder who had two thumbs.

Anyhow, I'm rambling I know, but I'm exhausted!

To sum it up, it was a good experience, I'm psyched it's over and in disbelief. :)

Congrats!! While coming back from Tijuana Mexico at the POE, saw 2 escape attempts from young mexicans trying to get into the USA. 1 fellow was actually trying to sneak up through the line (we were walking, then catching transit back to san diego), He got up to the POE officers desk, all hunched down, then tried to jolt past the desk, he didnt get that far, before Immigration officers swarmed on him! And while still in line, we could see outside a group of mexicans being chased by officials. They made it over a big fence, ito USA territory, but not sure how further past that they got! Was just like tv!!

Congrats

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Good luck! I'm sure you'll be fine. :) Seriously, it was nothing! Lots of waiting. Make sure to get in to the back of the elevator and face the back -- that's where it opens. :) We didn't have to pay anything extra and they didn't even ask to see any photos or emails or anything!

They sell crappy coffee there, but if you want real stuff there's a Tim Hortons two blocks West of the embassy. :)

The embassy entrance is on St.Alexandre and it's just around the corner -- no big flags or anything. We actually walked past it because we were expecting signs and such.

Oh, if you want a good burger and fries, there's a place called Nichol's on St.Catharine just across from the Eaton Centre. :) VERY good and good prices! The poutine there is awesome. :D So's the smoked meat sandwich, the "Star". :D

Good luck!!

Hey Chicken Little, So your number was C1, eh? You showed up around 7:30 too? Well if my cousin, Stefan, and I didn't leave to grab breakfast I would have been ahead of you! hehe We were the ones leaving as you and your husband came in. I felt it was too early and was hungry. I ended up coming back at 8:30 and was number C10 but I was finished and out of there at 10:00.

I was also late the next day picking up my passport as well. I know they told us to be there at 2:30 but I didn't show up til 3!! I was at the Catherine the Great exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts and lost track of the time. When I finally got up to the 19th floor there was just me and another guy waiting (he was late too), but everyone was in a meeting so we had to wait a very long time!! Finally at 4 pm they called me to window 12 where a woman behind the window scolded me like a child for not being there at 2:30. Oh well, at least I got the visa in hand.
