Hi everyone,

I know this question has been asked many times but im hoping someone guide me in my quest to get a Florida State License.

I currently have a Australian and New Zealand drivers license so will I be required to sit a practical driving test and/or a written exam??

Tried contacting the DMV here but after being transferred three times and getting a different answer each time I am concerned....

As far as documents go i think i need to take

  • EAD card
  • Passport
  • Marriage certificate
  • SSN card
  • 2 x Proof of address

Am i missing anything??

Thanks :D

Transfer my Out of Country or International license to Florida

Added: September 16, 2013 / Updated: November 6, 2015

I have an out of country or international license. How do I transfer that to a Class E Florida driver license?

Please visit a Florida driver license or Tax Collector’s office to obtain an original Florida driver license.

Exams Reciprocated for Class E Driver License

The Class E written and driving exams are reciprocated if the applicant presents a driver license from any one of the following:

- One of the 50 United States, District of Columbia
- United States Territories
- Panama - if issued prior to January 1, 2000
- Canada*
- France
- Republic of Korea (South Korea)
- United States Military
- Germany (reciprocates the driving exam only)
- Republic of China (Taiwan)

Otherwise, you will be required to take the road signs, road rules, and driving exams.  Proof that you have been licensed will waive the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education Course (TLSAE).

Missileman beat me to it- you'll have to pass both the written and practical driving tests to get your license in Florida since they will not accept licenses from Australia or New Zealand. Written involves the sign test and rules; the driving test itself will likely be the easiest one you'll ever take as Florida doesn't even require parallel parking.

I would just double check that they aren't going to make you take the four hour drug and alcohol test. It's available online and I know the guidance above says they waive it but just verify because it may have changed.

I believe you also have to take a four hour drug and alcohol awareness test as a first timer. It's available online but make sure you have that certificate of completion in hand to schedule the physical driving test.

That was going to be my next question haha!

I dont need the drug and alcohol test before my written exam? Just my physical? DMV is backed up so I am sitting the written on Friday but I cant get an appointment till Feb for the physical...

They might waive it as noted in missileman's post but I would just double check.  I can easily see a mix up where someone thinks you need it and turns you away because they don't realize you can waive it.  It should just be needed before the physical test, if they do end up requiring it.  I think you can take it online anytime, should you either need to do it or decide to do it just to cover all bases.

Sorry I'm not 100% on any of this- it's been awhile since I dealt with the FL DMV and as you've found, it seems everyone has a different answer at DMVs!

They really messed you up didn't they... Glad that part is done.. hoping the AOS goes smoothly now!

Yeeeeep. In the end the expedite did absolutely nothing because it was processed under the normal three month turn around time after I re-sent the documents. Fingers crossed its smooth sailing from here.
